Not certain this translates to the East Coast and Midwest, but I have very fond memories of attending "Renaissance Faires" out here on the West Coast, pipe in hand... attendees dressed in period costume (for the most part) and enjoyed period entertainment, food, etc... pipe smoking was not only OK, it was smiled upon. I honestly thought the Ren Fair phenomenon was a midwestern disease that didn't spread to the coasts. Until today I had no idea that Ren Fairs existed outside the flyover states. I am both mystified and amused.
There's been a LONG RUNNING Ren Faire just across the Tappan Zee, just north of Suffern (Stokes Forrest Area). I've never been, but I know the village is there year round.

Attended a few of those in ages past when my wife and I were first married. They were a lot fun. Bought leather bags, kaftans, jewelry, etc. Watched guys in period garb battling with wood swords and drank a lot of beer.

I remember the first Faires, when it was a fundraiser, and used to go on a regular basis after it moved to the Malibu area. I even worked one Faire in the late '70's. The place was a real hoot after hours. I had several Thespian friends in high school that worked at the Colorado Renaissance Fair. They said that the after hours parties were really something too. I suspect that a lot of smoking occurred, but of a different herb.

One of the largest in the world takes place an hour from me. Thousands of people camp out for like two weeks and just inact massive fantasy battles etc. I've been saying I'd like to go for awhile now. Maybe this year. It's insane though. A sea of tents. Pretty much an excuse to live the life of medieval hedonism for many. haha PENNSIC WarThat’s next level ren fair - it’s the largest SCA meetup in the world. Most of the people there will be members and will come with a group organized by their local nobility. It’s essentially a large reenactment event where everybody is required at a minimum to wear clothing from before 1600, and many of the people will be in full character the whole time. Move been dragged along to a couple of smaller events. My advice: if you want to go, prepare the clothes before hand. Go for late renaissance so that a clay pipe and some rope tobacco fits the character. Connect with your local chapter first, they will be happy to guide you. If you can bring a few jugs of homemade mead (fortunately this is the easiest booze to make at home) you’ll make friends. I was thinking about getting into this stuff. A few friends as well. I also have some experience forging, so I'm sure I'd make friends easy. Funny you mention it, I have been planning on making some mead for fun. A friend of mine even keeps bees.

I was a fencer in the SCA for about 2 years. There was too much drama, so I bailed. The politics of all of it was ridiculous.

If nothing else, SCA events are a good place for a part time smith to sell metal work and talk shop.

I'm far from crafting anything I'd sell. haha I have made daggers/knives as gifts for friends though. It would be a great hobby to get back into in the next year or so when I buy a home and have a place to construct a modest forge.

Oh yes the Ren Fairs... I have been to a few back in the day when my big kid was a little kid...lol It is a total hoot of a good time! And yes there is a ton of bosoms poring over way to small and ill fitted corsets! You can get a tankard of mead and a huge turkey leg at every other tent. My experience was all good. Good folks just having good fun! Here is a link to the NY State Ren Fair: renfair.com/ny/
