Not certain this translates to the East Coast and Midwest, but I have very fond memories of attending "Renaissance Faires" out here on the West Coast, pipe in hand... attendees dressed in period costume (for the most part) and enjoyed period entertainment, food, etc... pipe smoking was not only OK, it was smiled upon.

I likewise have fond memories of the Colorado Renaissance Festival. It's been going since the early '80s at least. I'm sure that smoking was fine back then (when I didn't smoke), just as I'm sure that it's strictly verboten now that I do.

I remember the first Faires, when it was a fundraiser, and used to go on a regular basis after it moved to the Malibu area. I even worked one Faire in the late '70's. The place was a real hoot after hours.

It does good sir: kingrichardsfaire.net/ctfaire.com/There are many others up and down the eastern seaboard as well. But those are the ones that are frequented by me and mine. I was not a pipe smoker at the last visit to CTFaire, but this time around that shall be different. I cannot say that I have seen lunting there, but shall endeavor to change that. ExChef

They are still popular here in the east. Where else can you go and pay a quarter for someone to eat dirt?

We have quite a few faires here in the Midwest. Most of them are small but there are a few larger ones within driving distance. My favorite faire was one that we attended in St. Petersburg Florida. It had a human chess match plus all the jousting and sword play. I enjoy them quite a bit. I love having an ale with a smoked turkey leg haha.

I live about 9mi from the Arizona Ren Fair. Haven't been there in several years.it is a nice way to spend a couple of hours. Being a member of a Midevil recreation group where time is spent researching a time period I have different view.

I remember going to the very first AZ Ren Fair, and an amazing amount of it was actually what life was like during the Renaissance. Nowadays, it's something entirely out of control with a carny atmosphere. They typically do have a great raptor show, though.

Then I point out to them the style of Kilt they are wearing wasn't even closer to being period they didnt like it.

I saw an ad today for one in Albuquerque, which seems so incongruous - like a Roaring 20s bash in Bhutan. But it reminded me of this song, which is always a good thing:

One of the largest in the world takes place an hour from me. Thousands of people camp out for like two weeks and just inact massive fantasy battles etc. I've been saying I'd like to go for awhile now. Maybe this year. It's insane though. A sea of tents. Pretty much an excuse to live the life of medieval hedonism for many. haha PENNSIC War

There is a Ren Fest in Hammond, La that runs every weekend in November. It's not bad and most of it is Renaissance period correct. However, I don't consider Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings and steampunk to be part of the Renaissance period.

We have had one just outside Houston for at least 50 years. I have never had any desire to go, but many of my friends and relatives love them, and the college students look forward to working it.

Having never been to a Ren Fair I'm not sure of the details. But wouldn't the era celebrated predate the arrival of tobacco in Europe?

I honestly thought the Ren Fair phenomenon was a midwestern disease that didn't spread to the coasts. Until today I had no idea that Ren Fairs existed outside the flyover states. I am both mystified and amused.

Having never been to a Ren Fair I'm not sure of the details. But wouldn't the era celebrated predate the arrival of tobacco in Europe? Dude, it's a Ren Fair. About sixty different things are being celebrated. You have six guys dressed like a wizard, eight dudes playing poorly-constructed "old-timey" string instruments, and about a hundred booths full of people selling pewter dragons or mystic crystals or god knows what.
There's no unifying theme.
The day to day odor is a potent stew of patchouli, body odor, and sawdust. Edit: also, it's just a good time. Nobody takes themselves too seriously in a world full of fat men and women dressed as elves, or wizards, or what have you. It's all a gag about fantasy works.
A Ren Fair demands you surrender your dignity at the door, and just kinda roll with the general spirit of selling pewter dragons and playing poorly-constructed lyres.

Exactly this, it’s just goofy fun. While you will find some historical accuracy it’s generally overrun by, well, goofy fun. I usually grow my beard out, make it grey and go as a dark wizard, jet black Churchwarden pipe and all. It’s actually probably the most socially accepting place I’ve been in public for pipe smoking.

I admit that what I like most is seeing how the women dress up in the sexy costumes. And the craft beer. The one in Hammond also allows smoking. I've giving serious consideration into dressing up as the Celtic version of Saint Nicholas and going one year.

Most of the people there will be members and will come with a group organized by their local nobility. It’s essentially a large reenactment event where everybody is required at a minimum to wear clothing from before 1600, and many of the people will be in full character the whole time. Move been dragged along to a couple of smaller events. My advice: if you want to go, prepare the clothes before hand. Go for late renaissance so that a clay pipe and some rope tobacco fits the character. Connect with your local chapter first, they will be happy to guide you. If you can bring a few jugs of homemade mead (fortunately this is the easiest booze to make at home) you’ll make friends.

The Renaissance Pleasure Faire, owned and run by the Pattersons, began in southern California as a fundraiser for Pacifica Radio in the late 1950's or early '60's. One very vivid memory I have from the first Faire are the midgits wearing jester costumes, standing in cages that were suspended from the branches of trees that flanked the entryway, calling down Elizabethan insults and curses upon the crowd below. It was a far more primitive affair, and probably closer to reality than the later versions. Walter Brennan finally succeeded in having it evicted and it moved out to the Paramount Ranch in Malibu where it continued as a commercial enterprise for many years, spawning the creation of the NorCal Faire and then others around the nation. I worked the Faire for a summer in the mid 70's and it was great fun. No midgits, but a lot of very comely wenches and a free-for-all after hours.

I've been to a few Ren Faires and enjoyed every one of them.
My most recent one was about 3 yrs ago. I don't do the costumes and such. But I enjoy watching the work others put in. And hey what's not to love about watching sword fighting and jousting up close? 😁
