‘Mother Earp,’ a pipe-smoking mother of 9, was a role model and a companion...
Imagine being a pioneer mother to nine children while being married to a man who is as restless and cantankerous as they come.
That was the situation in which Virginia Ann Cooksey found herself, in the years after her 1840 wedding to Nicholas Porter Earp.
Five of her children were the legendary “fighting Earp boys” — James, Virgil, Wyatt, Morgan, and Warren. There were three girls –Martha, Virginia, and Adelia — but only the last one lived to adulthood. She also raised a stepson, Newton.
Virginia Ann lived a full life in a time, which we can today only imagine.....
Virginia Ann smoked a pipe, dipped snuff and may have been illiterate, but was blessed with a lot of common sense and was deeply loved by the Earp clan.
Nick’s good friend, B.B. Harris gave Virginia Ann a meerschaum pipe and told her:
“Mother Earp, I present you with this pipe. It is the pipe of peace; and when you have trouble with the old man, just put it in your pipe and smoke it.”
