...my SO thinks I'm nuts because I keep my opened tins of tobacco by the sofa and open them occasionally and sniff deeply and enjoy the aroma... (some of you may think I'm nuts anyway...)

I don't keep my tins in the house, but I DO open one every now and then when I'm in my office and take a deep sniff of that heavenly aroma...unless it's a heavy latakia blend.

I like to imbibe tobacco and have since I was a kid. So if you're "nuts", you have company, along with anyone who likes the smell of flowers, the forest, potpourri, perfume/cologne, a good wine, etc, i.e., you're entirely sane, whatever that is.

That's half the pleasure of pipe smoking, bunging the nose in a tin of tobacco and take some deep sniffs, so tell DW, that she's utterly wrong. When I was a child, I always took sniffs whenever my father opened a fresh tin of tobacco. Oh, the smell of 'Old English' in the morning.

I do this too, and I love it. Thanks to a ‘patch friend, I discovered my favorite tobacco to sniff is Dark Fired Kentucky.

I once knew a lady whose husband had died. She kept a bowl of his favorite blend on a table. She said the smell reminded her of the good times with him.

Admittedly, I am NUTS about my tobaccos... thankfully no one else occupies this household but me, so unlikely to be committed to Chattahoochie.

I am the same way but I take it even further. I make everyone around me smell every jar or tin that I am getting ready to smoke. How could they not like it like I do. My girlfriend smoke cigs and I always make her take a few puffs off of my pipe to see how she likes it. Someday she will convert...someday.

I like all sorts of things vinegar is in, as long as it's not right out of the bottle. The scent with my medications drives me crazy. Give me garlic pickles and I can dig it all day long. You would think as much as I mention McC Vinegar Catsup i would not be fond of it, but I do sneak sniffs of it. I can't say I enjoy it, but it's a must sniff

I open my buffet cabinet and armoire that house all my tobacco’s and all the blends make a heavenly smell, all the non smokers agree.
The weird part is that everything is in either vacuum sealed tins, or screwed tightly mason jars... all my tins have the concave lid that tells me the seal isn’t compromised, and none of them are over 5 years old...somehow the smell gets out which makes me wonder about the long term prospects.

Maybe the manufacturers smear tobacco over the outside of the packaging to draw you to it so you smoke it. That way you'll have to buy more. It's a marketing stunt I tell ya.

It's not unusual or odd. The smell of tobacco and especially latakia is what got me into this hobby! Whenever I smell latakia, it takes me back to when I was 15 and walked into a Tinder Box for the first time.

Non compos mentis...you are not. The most pleasure that I get from pipe-smoking, comes from the 'sniffing" stage of the ritual. Snicking my prodigious proboscis into a pouch, or jar of the tobacco that I am about to smoke is my "Calgon....take me away" moment! I know, sadly, that what I am about to load and light.... will taste nothing like what I am sniffing. I wish it were not so.
Sniffing tobacco is one of life's pleasures. That special pipe-tobacco aroma... is what got me started, way back in 1966, when I walked into the Wally Frank pipe store on Nassau Street/Fulton Street, in lower-Manhattan, NYC. Oh!... to be back in those days! I was in heaven when I stuck my nose in those huge, glass, apothecary jars, that were filled with special blends of pipe tobaccos. I would hang back and watch as all the Wall Street "suits" poured into the store, at lunch-time, to buy pipe-tobacco, cigars, etc. I knew that one day, I wanted to be just like them.... I never did manage to become a Wall St. exec, but I did manage to smoke a pipe.
Drama...the nose, knows!
