A question for all you dark fired Kentucky and Va lovers. I've recently taken a liking to MacB HH Old Dark Fired, and I wondered, before I load up on it, how GH Kendall Kentucky compares to it? As A confirmed lataholic (I go to meetings) I know nothing of this genre.

I love both, but I don't find them much alike at all. I find ODF to be more earthy and a pungent sweet, more complex.
The slower you go with KK the more rewarding and complex it gets, but not as deep as ODF. I find it to be less sweet and more on the dry side than ODF. Can get hot quick if you aren't careful with the shag cut.
If you find you like KK, grab some Dark Birds Eye - excellent smoke from the same playbook from GH&Co.

Between the two, it's a toss-up... the G&H is less tolerant of lax smoking habit and hard puffing, but rewards in spades if gently finessed. Its flavor profile differs from HH, and pleasantly surprises with each new pipeful in the G&H tradition. The ODF sings a much more familiar refrain given the genre. Since I'm unable to choose between them, and really never tried before now (unsuccessfully), both are always in cellar and ready for rotation duty. Both 4 Stars, handily.

I'm just starting a bowl of KK. It's not one I smoke a lot, probably because I don't have a lot. Old Dark Fired is a daily diver, however. These two tobaccos are completely different and I never thought to compare them. I do like the Fired part of each one. I'm just going to smoke the KK and Wonder about Fired leaf and how they do it in different parts of the world.
LataKia had my attention for a couple years. Now I don't find it as interesting as I once used to. The Kentucky keeps me going--and it's not because I live here now.

Solani 660 is awesome. Here's my review:
They claim there are no additives or flavors but I disagree; there is a sweet topping to this blend. It's light, but it's there, though it is not a distraction. Some say there's a whiskey topping, and I really can't argue that point, though whiskey isn't what I taste. I think it has to do with how the red Virginia is processed. The sweet dark fruit and earth of the red and brown Virginias are the stars, but it's rounded out with a light nutty Kentucky spice, and slightly tangy citrus notes from the yellow Virginia which is a minor component. It's easy to break apart and stuff or cube-cut as you please. The nic-hit is just past the mild threshold. It burns a little slow with a cool, clean, smooth consistent flavor from start to finish. Won't bite or get harsh. Has no dull moments. Leaves just a little moisture in the bowl. The after taste is pleasant. Can be an all day smoke.

Gentlemen, thank you for the detailed and erudite replies. I learned a lot here about those 2. I had no idea whether they were different enough to have both; now I know, gotta have both. Too bad SP is out of KK, now that I want it, I can't. But, dammit, you all are gonna cost me more money by throwing a third tobacco out that sounds like I have have. You're not enablers, you're encouragers !

Our motto here: Helping to fuel is the right answer, otherwise you are broke down on the side of the road....fuel means getting closer to the promised land.

For burley and dark fired I love orliks offering. Dark strong kentucky is the blend that started my love of dark fired. Straight from the tin it folds and stuff beautifully. I smoked most of the first tin on a two day drive and haven't looked back.

I, too, love all things dark fired. ODF beats KK in my opinion. KK gets a bit ashy to me.
