So I tried the Franke method of packing and I've gotta say, I like it.
I'm about half way through the bowl and I'm not getting that crunchy hard-to-tamp section that I normally get.
I'll see how the rest of the bowl goes but so far this is proving good for me.
For anyone who isn't familiar with this method, here's one of a few on the tube...

I tried that once and most of the tobacco went on the floor.

If the Frank method works for you, go with it. I experimented with it and while I didn't adopt it, that final thumb twist at the top of the bowl was a takeaway that I frequently use to do a codger fill.

...both look viable and effective, but my sloppy method has worked well for 45 years, so...

Like so many things in this hobby, it's whatever works for you.

And we have not discussed different packing methods for varied cuts. Guess that could be another new thread.

I haven't been able to get the Frank method to work well on a stack pipe. It's ok for for shorter pipes, but I find with a stack, I have a little loose tobac in most of the bowl, and a whacking great lump at the top. I find just shoving and tamping until it's full works for me.

I mostly sprinkle/drop gravity-feed my bowls with rubbed-out baccy until a bit over the top, then hard-knuckle the sides to settle-in the mixture. Once well-settled in I give it a pack, not too tight not too loose. Char light then light tamp... one or two lights more and I'm off to the races.

This is an interesting thread. I recently watched a YouTube video about leaving an air space at the bottom of the pipe when smoking flake tobacco. I have been doing that lately, and find I get a cooler smoke. That said, the older I get the less desire I seem to have for foreplay; I just want to get on with the business at hand.....

The Frank method works for me, but is too much of a chore. I'm mostly with Baboo in my packing method.
