I have several Savinellis that take a filter, but have always put in an adapter and smoked them without one. I recently purchased a cob with a filter and decided to give it a go with the filter in place. The tobacco was great even with a filter, so my question is this: How many of you smoke a pipe with a filter and what are your thoughts on using a filter vs no filter?

I have a few Savs with balsa filter, and i like that filter approach. Does help remove moisture in a deep bent without effecting taste.

I would be firmly in the no filter camp and the few filter pipes I own are smoked without filter/adapter.
While I don't think all filter types restrict air flow, that is I suppose the primary reason I smoke without them, as my preference leans towards an extremely open draw.
I willingly accept the occasional wet pipe in trade for an open draw.

No filter for me but I also make sure the tobacco is well dried before smoking and run a pipe cleaner through during the smoke.

I use a filter with my Falcons, helps to keep them clean.

i use falcon filters in my cobs, cut in half, but mostly just to catch moisture from my breath.
That said, I did just get a load of 9mm charcoal filters to try.

I use a balsa one occasionally, when it's something really strong. I think it cuts the nicotine a bit.

Don't use them, and don't feel a need for them. Just my $0.02

If I get a pipe with a filter I toss the filter. Never liked them and never will. I will say that the Brigham pipes have a unique filter system which is a maple tube that can be washed and reused. With some careful maneuvering you can pass a pipe cleaner while the filter is in place.

I only use a filter in a cob, or unless the manufacturer recommends it, even then I try with and without and decide what works best!

My filtered pipes, cobs and Savs, are normally the only ones which recieve much action these days. The exception is meers in which I prefer Lats.

When I see what a Sav wooden filter looks like after a smoke, I think I should use them, but I don't. It doesn't offer a smoother smoke to me, can't run a pipe cleaner down the stem, and it's like using ice in your whiskey... what would Hemingway do? (To be honest, I have no idea, but he didn't seem like a filter kind of guy to me.)

I smoke almost exclusively filtered pipe. Most of them are 9mm filtered pipes (but do have some cobs with 6mm filters). I prefer Natur Meerschaum filters for both 6mm and especially 9mm filters. I do have some carbon and Vauen paper 9mm filters, but a majority of pipes and tobaccos that I smoke work best with the Natur Meerschaum filters and are what I recommend you use.

Just realized that I did not answer the question. I use a filter once and that is all.

I can normally flip a 9mm meershaum filter and get two smokes out of one. I can also usually get a couple of smokes from a Grabow filter in a cob; however, I always change them when I switch tobacco.

For the pipes that I own that are made to accept filters, I use filters. I like that they make the smoke drier and somewhat cooler. Not being able to pass a pipe cleaner is not such a problem since the filter takes care of the moisture. But I smoke non-filtered pipes most of the time.

I never use filters. I don't even use the Dry Rings on my Falcon. I used at first but, as I found the whole thing tasted kind of weird, I stopped using them.

Good point Mark, if you use a filter with the same tobacco a couple times should be fine. Like you, I always change filters when switching tobaccos.

I like that they make the smoke drier and somewhat cooler. I seem to get a cooler smoke with a filter, but haven't noticed a difference in moisture.

I had an experience with a filter where the filter helped me to taste the flavours better.
That's why I bought some more to see if it was a one-off or something that I can replicate.
