I think she's probably right about cigarettes (and I like that she destroys the partisan narrative) - but how then to explain the stigma and bans on pipe and cigar smokers. They're more often associated with more educated and/or affluent people.
As much as I despised going into a cigarette smoke-filled restaurant or bar, I still think it was crazy to ban them outright. It always seemed to me that having strictly non-smoking restaurants by choice would have been a good business opportunity. Or even fully partitioned areas. Smoking and non-smoking tables were a joke.

@chico I very much agree that the partitioned smoking areas or the heavy duty extractor systems were the ideal solution and was working before regulations were changed.

Labor laws would also have been good - staff should not be penalized for choosing not to work in smoking areas. I'm sure the service industry is big enough that it could accommodate both smoker and non-smoker staff and patrons.

Since we have smoke free places, I don't see why other places can't be non smoke free... I.e. Smoking WILL happen here so don't complain about it. If you don't like it go elsewhere.

You mean like those sponsored smoking rooms you see in Germany at the airport and train stations? Those places are horrible. I went in one thinking I'd smoke a quick cigarillos, but fled gasping for air after a few breaths. Maybe the ventilation system was broken or something and they're not always so bad. If I were king of the world I'd enact a law that all airports have a pipe and cigar lounge. 😁

As long as there is an ale in every pot..... Hell, yes - though I might have Samuel Smith make it instead of Sierra.

That said, in Ireland a lot of money has been spent on beer Gardens with heaters etc. They're covered (cos it rains all the time) but have uncovered areas for that sunny day in the year.
