Two reviews in one this time. First up, and long overdue, is Orlik's Dark Strong Kentucky. Darin (cobguy) sent me a tin of this to try out a few months ago, and I have been cautiously conserving it since.
Opening the tin you get an aroma not unlike maple syrup, it smells amazing. The presentation is immaculate. The flakes clearly show the layering process, dark stripes on the outside, with a lighter, Virginia stripe through the center. The flakes are a touch damp, so I generally rub them out the night before I plan to have a bowl. Once dried, it packs well and lights easily. The flavor is exceptional, the blending of the dark fired and Virginia, with a slightly sweet topping that remains balanced and consistent throughout the bowl. Getting carried away with this one will likely leave a bit of bite, but if you take it easy, this is a fantastic smoke. The room note is very pleasant, and will likely keep others happy. One or two relights per bowl, mainly to keep the pace slow in my case. Good even burn, with just a bit of moisture left in the pipe. I always run a cleaner down the shank after any bowl in any pipe, then fold it over and swab out the bowl, so this is no concern for me. Overall, a unique smoke, with a fantastic aroma, delightful flavor and average helping of nicotine.
Moving onto the Golden Sliced, I realize that I am late to the game on this one. What can I say that hasn't already been said? I just cracked my first tin the other day, and the distinct fragrance of citrus wafts from inside. The flakes have a pretty optimal moisture content, and they rub out easily. Could be smoked right away, but I have been giving it a bit of dry time anyhow. Packs well, lights beautifully. The smoke is cool and mild, yet satisfying. The aroma is mild and pleasant, not one that will run others off. The flavor is smooth and simple, yet crisp and complex at the same time. A top notch smoke, as it has long been hailed. A bit milder than LNF, OGS is perhaps the closest thing I have found to a perfect VaPer. I liked it more than Escudo, and my wallet concurs. Nic content is not real high, but enough to satisfy the cravings. I could easily smoke this blend all day.
