Well, I read in another thread that salt is bad for wood so I've used cotton wool... These are my latest ebay acquisitions (one much tinier than I had imagined) all getting the alcohol-cotton wool treatment. I wonder how they will turn out...

Are you sure you haven’t treated them? They look great.

Are you sure you haven’t treated them? They look great. I used a dremel with a sanding pad to take most of the crap off the inside of the bowl and take it down to within a hair's breadth of the wood, but the shape of it didn't fit the bottom of the bowl. On the outside I rubbed some linseed oil on them and that's about it. Oh, on the leftmost pipe, there was a hole in the stem which I patched with super glue and baking soda. It worked a treat. Only thing left to do is get some fine grit sanding pads and clean the chatter off the stems.

You did a great job. I wish I had a tenth of those skills.

You did a great job. I wish I had a tenth of those skills. mate, I have NO skill at all. Seriously, I was working blind. It went something like this... "There's a load of gunk in that bowl...I know, let's see what happens if I stick the sander thingy to my dremel and stuff it in there." That was it, apart from the disastrous, "hmm, let's see if I can remould the military mount with some solder." Needless to say that didn't work. The mount is a complete mess! You see... 0.3% skill. The pipes were in pretty decent condition to begin with.

Legend...I've used the cotton/iso treatment by preference for years. Works great.

This is the first I've heard of this salt-alternative treatment. I've read that the salt treatment will outright ruin a cherry wood pipe, such as one of the French Ropps.

No salt/cotton balls/cat litter and liquid in my pipe bowls apart from the moisture that comes from smoking. Never. I understand, that it is done to get rid of ghosting; I've cleaned some vile pipes found at flea-markets and a careful reaming and/or a couple of bowlful of tobacco, took care of that.

well, out of the 4 pipes, some of which I had already dremelled, one had some gunk left after 24 hours, but they all weren't too bad...unless I did something wrong (highly likely).
I also managed to remove the chatter from the stem with one of the polishing heads...it also removed the lacquer from the stem so it looks worse than it did before.
I swear, I'm never touching an estate pipe again...I've got enough, especially after my friend's Peterson gifts.

LL, I use a 12mm dowel with 220 grit sand paper wrapped around it to get the bottom of the bowl clean.leave about 10mm over the end of the dowel and it will conform to the curve.

Thanks for that tip. For the bottom of the bowl I used the pointed polishing end on the dremel. I don't think it was rough enough, but the bowl looks clean enough - it's going to get charred up anyway.
