Is it normal to have a pipe in which tobacco has little flavor? Two of my briar pipes and my MM cob seem to smoke well enough, but I noticed the other briar pipe doesn't seem to transmit the Latakia smokiness and the dry, sour note, etc. of John Cotton's Smyrna.
Flavors of HH ODF (the only other tin I'm smoking at the moment) also seem muted in that pipe. I've smoked pipes for only a few months, though. Does this happen with some pipes (briar or otherwise), or am I missing something?

Might not be broken in enough. I went through several months of not getting flavor out of tobaccos or the pipes. Usually Lat comes through in almost anything. Maybe that pipe needs a different loading technique or some pipes work better with aros and some with English et al. I am getting to know mine individually now and have had more success. Had I listened to my brain I would have tossed all away.

I've had that too, but I agree with David - I think, in my case too, it had something to do with the pipe not being broken in enough.

In addition to the above, the longer a pipe goes without being cleaned, the more muddy and indistinct each bowlful can become.

Well, I've had briars that never let any flavors thru no matter what did with the. It happens, fortunately not very often.

I have a pipe that took eons to come around. If it wasn't a pretty pipe.I would have dumped it.I hung with it though. When it finally broke in it started smoking very good. That was 30 years ago and I'm still smoking the pipe..Maybe yours just needs some TLC and patience.

I second the idea about cleaning the pipe. Give it a good cleaning with evercelaer and see if that helps. I keep my pipes exceptionally clean and clean them after every smoke.

Thanks for your responses! I forgot to mention this is an estate pipe, so I thought it would have been broken in when I received it. I also cleaned the bowl with salt and alcohol while I disinfected the mouthpiece. By "cleaning" the pipe, do you mean running pipe cleaners through the mouthpiece, draught hole, etc.? I do that with each pipe after every smoke. Perhaps I'll try the alcohol/salt procedure again. If that doesn't help, I wonder if this could be the situation slowroll describes.

Well, if the pipe is just flat, no flavor, it's probably not a cleaning issue. Klaggued up or ghosted pipes taste strong, sharp and lousy.

I've run into no flavors in some estates after deep cleaning, and it usually works itself out after the alcohol and whatnot clear out.

Did you clean out the shank as well?

Did you clean out the shank as well? That's a really good point. Some pipes build up a ton right at the beginning of the shank. Or is that the end of the shank? Damn, here I go again

I'm guessing that it's not filtered. Also,is the tenon loose? You could be drawing air. What make and style is the pipe. Some of the older estates have a "carburetor",a small opening on the bottom of the bowl to make them smoke cooler and drier. If that is the case you need to put your finger over it when drawing on the pipe.If it does use a filter try smoking it without one,but clean the shank out well afterwards. If the tenon is loose, try a little bee's wax on it.(Some chap sticks use it)

Most pipes can be regarded good or bad, but sometimes Neutral. I've had a few like that over the years. They smoke flat as you state and never seem to develop a distinct character. They don't smoke bad, but never deliver a Zone smoke and you always feel something is missing.
