I know that in some areas of life, I can have an addictive response, not so with the pipe or snuff for what it's worth.
i thoroughly enjoy the pipe, but when I abstained because of some surgeries I went through, I never had a "Jonesing" type response...certainly nothing like cigarette smokers that are trying to kick the habit.
Certainly, when dealing with a nasty cold, flu or pneumonia, I had no craving for nicotene

I'm with DT on this one. I used to drink heavily because I wanted to. Now I don't drink because I don't want to. Would be no different with pipes. I love it too much and at the rate I am going they won't have to fill my grave with dirt, just empty out my cellar on top of me

And then, when I do sit down with a pipe, all of that stuff that I've been busy with simply melts and fades away, you know?

Brian Levine recently went on a rant about how European cigarettes are mandated to have lower nicotene content, and now the FDA is looking into doing the same here...he said what they will come up with for pipe and cigars is anyone's guess. He asked the question if we decided to start smoking tomato and potato plant leaves, would that also come under their watchful eye also?
I think big cigarette tobacco is probably the culprit in why we all get grouped in the same category....I had heard it said that in the tobacco settlement with big cigarette tobacco, they were given a pass on not revealing the recipe's of their cigarettes as part of the settlement....if that is true, I can understand why they poisoned the well in the public perception on all things nicotene.

I've never smoked cigarettes, just pipes and the occasional cigar. I enjoy them, but don't need them. I've stopped for illness, surgeries, and when I just don't feel like it. No cravings at all.

I smoke once every two weeks or so - sometimes more frequently in the warm weather, and often less frequently in the colder weather (which is about 10 months of the year here).
But I DO enjoy it and wouldn't want to give it up for similar reasons to those already stated.
In fact, my wife is vegetarian, and she's concerned about the cancer-risk of pipe smoking. So, in order to balance the score sheet a bit, I'm considering going mostly vegetarian thus reducing my risk of bowel cancer to offset the pipe-smoking risk (which, in my case is pretty much negligible with the amount I smoke). That's a MASSIVE step for me cos I love my meat.

I give up the pipe temporarily frequently due to illness and, most recently, a mouth problem. I don't feel severe withdrawal symptoms. Nothing like cigarettes or Copenhagen, where I feel like Dr. Jekyll turning into Mr. Hyde.

I've smoked for 42 years now. I have a nic jones the size of an NFL lineman. I haven't smoked cigarettes much since I took up the pipe - not in some misguided attempt to get healthy - but because pipe tobacco is just so much better. So, yeah, if I gave it up tomorrow (and I'm assuming this means no cigarettes either) I would suffer significantly. I envy those who smoke the occasional bowl and avoid the snare. I would posit that you are playing with fire (pun intended, heh!) because nicotine is an insidious demon that creeps on the unwary. For me, I was caught long ago, and embrace the beast apologetically.

I'm not addicted to tobacco at all, just as long as I can get it. It's not difficult to give up smoking. I've done it a lot of times.

...I've stopped temporarily from time-to-time...however, after 57 years of pipe smoking I defer to Charles Lamb..."with pipe in hand, when I take my last breath...I will exhale in jest..."

With pipes and the occasional cigar..............nothing. I can set my pipe down and forget about it, until a few weeks later when I think "I believe I will smoke my pipe". My two pennies, for what it is worth.

I have been smoking since I was 12 years old. If I had to give up my pipes, I would go back to cigarettes or cigars. Just the thought of giving up my pipes fills me with dread.

It would not be a problem for me. I never smoked cigarettes but I smoked cigars for years prior to smoking a pipe and I sometimes went for weeks or even months without smoking one. I never felt that I needed to have a smoke, nor do I feel that I need my pipe now.
On the other hand, I chewed leaf tobacco for about ten years. I quit cold turkey about 20 years ago and never felt that I needed a chew, but man, when I see somebody with a pouch of Red Man or Levi Garrett my mouth starts watering like the starving cave men in Quest for Fire when they see the herd of antelopes...

At only 3-4 bowls a week, no problem. But I would miss it, that's for sure.

I usually go a couple days between smoking my pipes, but when I do sit down in the den, I smoke them all day. I can't really see an addiction there.
