There was a trend (perhaps it still exists), for Italian-made pipes... you know the brands... and they were/are wonderful examples of "art" and for the most part, hand-made. I have several in my collection.
The reason I don't smoke them very often is that they tend to have BIG bowls. I don't always want to spend 2 hours on a pipe-full.
Thoughts? Comments?

I like big pipes and I don't know why.....
I have a couple and I really like them. I don't often smoke the whole bowl or only fill them up halfway. I will also smoke for 30 minutes and then come back to it 30 minutes later for another go. Mow some lawn, take a smoke break, mow some more, smoke some more, etc.

I probably have 20 Castello Pipes. Most are larger bowled except for a few of the 55 shape I have.

I agree. A medium bowl suits me the best.

How true how true... a big bowl for me is an infrequent albeit longed-for luxury. Medium and mini are my usual weapons of choice given the hurried battlefields I daily traverse.

I'm with you on this DT. I find I smoke my smaller bowls more often than not anymore. And, when I do smoke my larger pipes, I seldom fill them past half / two-thirds.
My tastes have also trended to higher nic / bold blends, which are a bit much in large pipes.

I honestly think my largest bowls are on my MM Country Gents. I usually don't pack it the whole way. My least favourite part of any smoke is the last 1/3rd- No way I want that bit to last 45 mins. haha

I generally like large (i.e., oversized, but not magnum) pipes, because I'm a big and tall person, have correspondingly large hands, and feel somewhat ridiculous holding a small pipe. Strangers used to tell me that they thought I was Dan Fouts of the Chargers. Now I'm an out of shape Dan Fouts, LOL.
The bore of the pipe is the most important feature to me. Most of my pipes have bores around 0.75", which is perfect for English/Balkan blends. I have narrower pipes that are best for Virginas and VaPers, and others up to 1" that are best for Burley blends.

I like, no, can't do without large bowls. Don't like large dia. Bowls, but deep, and about .7 to .8 in dia. -- 2 to 2 3/4 deep that hold about 7 -8 grams of tobac. 1 to 2 hours smoking pleasure sometimes, depending on pack. You may have noticed from my pipempictures that I'm kinda partial to to chimneys. I do think they accentuate the flavors.

I have a couple of two flake pipes that I like smoking at the fire pit on late summer nights. Most other times its a 7/8 x 1.5 or so bowl for my hour long pipe fulls.

...I enjoy large bowls...as stated, you don't have to fill them up...many times I may do half bowls but the feel of the larger pipes I'm accustomed to...of course I have many medium bowls as well...no issue with me on them either...

I smoke too fast and have large hands, so I tend to like large bowls. But, recently, I find my habits changing - slowing down and not having as much time to smoke, the smaller bowels work well for me.
Recently I acquired a Briar Works pipe, got it, thought, "Why did I order such a small pipe?", but its turned out to be the perfect size for a quick bit of contemplation and relaxation on the back patio.
That being said, one of my favorite pipes is a very large Sav Canadian and wouldn't part with it for any amount of money.

If I am watching a movie or otherwise sitting still for an hour or so, I enjoy smoking a large bowled pipe, but most of the time, I go with a medium (Dunhill Group 4 size) pipe so that I can clench if I need to and still use my hands.

Most of my pipes are medium-sized bowls, but I have three really large-bowled ones, A Lorenzo Filtro without one, a Comoy's Magnum and a Preben Holm (The Bathtub). In all three, I can fit my thumb up to the elbow and with the old McConnell Maduro Superb, I had about a three-hour smoke. The Old Fart

Most of my pipes fall into the group 4-5 sized range but I also have a number of group 6-ODA size as well. There are times when I want a good three hour smoke so I will pull out one of the big boys for that. I have one group 3 sized pipe but rarely reach for it.

I have one Castello - my only Eyetalian pipe. I just don't care for the typical large bowls. Since I mostly smoke VAs and such, a medium sized bowl lasts close to 1.5 hours. That is long enough.
