Hey folks,
I have smoked a pipe on and off since before there was an internet. My dad smoked a pipe, and his brother, my uncle, still does.
I look forward to meeting you all.

To tell you the truth I am a little self conscious. While I have been smoking for a while, I haven't been getting involved on line. I never thought of it. I participate in a couple of other forums, related to specific interests, and just never thought of pipe smoking that way.
Growing up, pipe smoking was just something Dad did. He rarely if ever talked about it. It was what he did while he did something else. It was kind of like the background music to his life. And back then, everyone smoked. It was not uncommon to see men smoking, (rarely women), while painting and scraping their boats, fishing, while fixing the car, while mowing lawn. It wasn't "a thing". Hard to describe, but it wasn't something you focused on.
One hardly paid attention. Nobody noticed how folks manipulated the pipe or dug out tobacco from the pouch.
So I have for years kind of seen it this way. And I didn't check in with people to see how things have changed. I have attended a few pipe shows and the like, and I used to liked to chat with the tobacconist a bit, that was it. The last few years it seems like there is an explosion of informative videos and pipe talk and tobacco talk. It is kind of exciting, but it feels a little awkward to me.
Think of how you would feel if there was a forum about how you move your hands while talking. Huh? Nobody consciously pays attention to that. Its not something you focus on. Imagine a video instructing you on the proper way to move your hands while talking, what kind of jewelry enhances hand movement etc. I know, it sound ridiculous.
Things change, and by and large I think it is for the better. Pipe smoking seems a little bit more lonely, a bit more solitary activity, and its good to share experiences and knowledge, and quirky habits and discoveries.

I certainly am and have been criticized for it often enough back in the day when people smoked in offices and on job sites. So, it is good to share pipe smoking experiences with those who also enjoy it. Welcome aboard!

I think that pipe smoking has become a hobby and it's increasingly so. Years ago I believe it was as you described... A way of life. I never thought of the transition as being so strange, but you've made a good point. Still... Consider this place as a hang out for like minded people. A lot of our conversation is not even pipe-related.

It seems when smoking wasn't uncommon, things were simpler and better. I think you are right in one way. The changes that have occurred in the last decade or so have made anti-smoking an accepted prejudice. The result is that smokers can be exiled without question, and nobody smokes un-self-consciously. We are just about the only ones we have to talk to anymore. The good development I see is that we are seeking out each other to talk and share. I never talked about smoking more than I have in the last little while. And there is an overload of great information and product reviews available. Time was, I figured out what I liked and stayed with it, now I am trying a little bit of everything. Its amazing, and really fun. It really is a hobby now, like model railroads or breeding miniature schnauzers. We are a leaning on each other because there is nobody else to lean on. So yea things were better, but there are a lot of real great things going on, like this forum!

Welcome from Brooklyn, NY. I probably fall into the reflective/introspective person, but it works for me. I rarely see other pipe smokers in my neighborhood, or anywhere else. I’ve never been a joiner or part of a group. But, what I love about the forum is I get to connect with other like minded people. We’re all from different walks of life, but our commonality connects us.
