I have to say I am going with this comfort with the familiar thing. Billy Budd Blonde in a Sav 320EX. Warmed over day old coffee.
The thing is you can get intimately familiar with a certain pipe and a certain tobacco, over time. I mean you know exactly how to load the pipe, every time, without thinking, without looking, how to smoke it, you know how to pace yourself, how to sip, you can tell by the taste how far down the ember is, when to tamp. It becomes like driving your old car to work. You become an unconscious expert on that tobacco in that pipe.
The cliche is that you become old friends with the smoke. But really its more like old acquaintances, the faults of your pipe or your tobacco have long become features, and you know how to avoid conflict and subconsciously work around the worst of it.
There is great comfort in "knowing the territory". It doesn't mean the territory is perfectly fine, it means you are perfectly fine with it.
