We've all seen those old movies.A group of mostly old timers sitting around a table in an English Pub drinking ale, smoking their pipes and telling each other tall tales. I've always imagined that I was there with them. Many years ago on a different forum I struck up conversation with a fella who lived in Plymouth England. We exchanged e-mails for a few years before he passed away. One time I asked him if he ever went to a pub.He said that the young punks had taken over and he felt out of place there so he didn't go any more.It kinda destroyed my fantasy...I guess pipe smokers really different.

There's a great program on Irish Pubs. I'll see if I can find the title. I am sure good ones are still out there, but it does appear the youth uncouth have taken over. I still remember a 60 cent highball in East Saint Louis, gunfire optional.

There are still some like that in Ireland, but with the anti-smoking laws you won't be able to have a pipe indoors. That said, there's an increasingly heavy investment in beer gardens - covered, heaters, dedicated outside bar, BBQ etc. Some do a great job....but the weather in Ireland, being what it is, doesn't make it terribly comfortable, even with all that.
On a good day though...

Good point and map, David, but every pub is on a pub crawl map and programs like Three Sheets take great pride in walking from one to another adding to their drunken stupor. Looks like fun on TV, but I like dives with few people

I was born and lived in England until I was 29, it used to be very social with the whole family hanging out, now the young yobs have taken over and families stay home! No smoking in pubs anymore!

I would rather go to the highlands and find a nice shade tree with a view on the Emerald Isle.

Plenty of bars in Pittsburgh that still permit smoking, though the list of good spots shrinks yearly. Gentrification and all.. Nothing like your favourite bar closing for a remodel and when you stop in three months later you find a bunch of chortling yuppies having tapas and drinking $7 domestics in their smoke-free D-baggedness.
As far as a pub type of atmosphere, you may find that on slow nights or during daytime hours. The key is finding a neighborhood with your desired demographic.

I was actually just telling a friend how I'm a little jealous when I see people in other countries singing traditional drinking songs together. Here in the states, the most you can look forward to is a group of drunk women singing and dancing along to that 'I Like Big Butts' song. SirMix-A-Lot

I understand what you meant when you wrote D-baggedness, but I read it as De-baggedness. In northern Ireland, someone is de-bagged when their trousers have been pulled down around their ankles. So when I read your post, I imagined a load of yuppies standing with their trousers around their ankles after someone had come in and de-bagged them all.

Now back to our channel: There are some videos/DVDs somewhere called On the Trail of Whisky and On the Trail of Irish Whiskey. Might be an American one, too. Pretty good stuff. Now, back to our madness. Ghost Yuppies in the Sky
