It's no secret that my goal is always Esoterica Tobacciana Penzance.
The way I purchase is based on when I became aware of it's existence, back in the late '90s.
I maintain a running spreadsheet on what I've spent on it since then. I crunch the numbers as time goes on, and watch the questionable offerings on eBay. I have kept track of when it was available at retail, (but I'm beginning to think the practice is futile.)
So, every year, I tally up what I've spent on it, and come up with a "per oz price."
Averaging 20 years, I haven't spent more than $19.00/oz.
Yes, this is extreme justification, but it's a good excuse for the wife, lol.

You could make some killer profits if you wanted to sell, maybe you need to send me some so I don't tell your wife! LOL

Just curious, have you every tried GL Pease Quiet Nights? I really dig it, scratches all the same itches. I prefer Penzance but I'd still be cool with Quiet Nights if I couldn't find Penzance.

There was a time I could never imagine paying so much for tobacco. But when you break it down, one bowl of ‘premium priced tobacco’ is considerably less than a premium cigar. Example, at $19.00/ounce, one bowl costs approximately $2.38 (assuming 8 bowls per ounce). A Fuente Hemingway Signature costs $8.

I love cigars, but nothing beats a pipe. Right now, I’m sitting on the roof deck, enjoying a bowl of St James Flake. It’s so pleasant and peaceful.

After trading and gifting I am lucky to have some with a bit of time. ...I'm not especially affluent, and the bulk of my discretionary spending is on pipe tobacco. The only reason I haven't held onto it when it was readily available at retail is because I smoke it regularly... I've purchased plenty of it at the price you mention... but I smoked it all!

There are people on this forum know of my generosity. When you come from being a man that was homeless and in an addiction that was slowly killing me, It's tough not to be a giving type as so many helped me. I am not tooting my horn here but when you see the prices folks are selling some of this tobacco for it is crazy. I have also never met so many caring and giving peole as I have in the pipe community. Many have become wonderful friends and it is a blessing. Forgive for how my brain wanders, past drinking and PTSD have it addled a bit! I wish you well Mr. Drama!

I agree whole-heartedly with your above remarks. Pipe-smokers, for whatever reason, have always seemed to me to be the most thoughtful, intelligent and kindest people on the planet, and that includes you. I am always happy and grateful to read and attempt to understand different points of view.

Dramatwist,I appreciate what you say and,I gather, suggesting. Now,I've never tried Penzance so I can't comment one way or the other,on price or availability. For me the problem is more of coming late to the party. I may have started smoking a pipe 1983,but it wasn't until 2014 that I found the better blends.I smoked mostly OTCs.I say mostly because around 2006 found a B&M and picked up a couple ounces of something nutty. But in 2014 I found these forums, and just last year I traded for some Frog Morton Cellar.I could easily see that as my everyday, goto smoke. But now it's gone.So I will have to find another that I can possibly cellar.Timing is everything, just wish I had stuck more with it when I started,I'ld have around 100 lbs vacuum packed.

Penzance is on my must-try list, along with Old Joe Krantz and Haunted Bookshop. But I will admit I am enjoying my Billy Budd Blonde and War Horse so much I can't, in my less curious moods, imagine I am missing anything.
Excellence in life is often found in the enjoyment of things that are plentiful and easily obtained. LOL
That said, I sure will try it when I can, though it ruin my tranquility.

I can't say that I enjoy Penzance any more or less than at least a dozen other similar blends that are easily obtainable. Penzance is very good, don't get me wrong, but when the mood strikes, Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend satisfies me just as well. I have many favorites that come in and out of favor... that doesn't mean I'm fickle. Maybe it just means that there's more mystery and fun in the chasing than the getting. I'd honestly eventually tire of vintage Bell's Three Nuns if that's all I had cellared. If Penzance is a curiosity currently out of reach, reach for a tin of Germain's Special Latakia Flake, or Quiet Nights... you won't be disappointed.
