I have a Big Ben Pipo that I have really enjoyed. Well I discovered this morning that the stinger got loose of the stem end and is stuck up near the bowl. I can't figure out how to retrieve it.
What is the point of a stinger anyway, except to frustrate pipe cleaners?

What is the point of a stinger anyway, except to frustrate pipe cleaners? It was a solution in search of a non-existent problem. From PSF: pipesmokersforum.com/community/threads/whats-a-stinger-for.4956/I have two pipes with stingers, I cannot say that they smoke any drier, I use them in my work rotation.

The point of a stinger is to introduce metal into the airway to produce an obstructed and wet smoking pipe. I have discarded many. A very small percentage did not degrade the smoke.

As mentioned previously here, the stinger was an effort to relieve or reduce tongue bite. Not realizing that tongue bite is mostly a result of one's own ph levels, many used to think that it had to do with both the temperature of the smoke and the moisture content.
I have removed the stingers from every estate pipe I have. They're all in a drawer in a baggie somewhere.

As mentioned previously here, the stinger was an effort to relieve or reduce tongue bite... That's what the lady at the tobacco counter told me as well; it's thought to cool the smoke and provide a barrier against tar and gunk. I keep them in place because it's easier to clean the gunk off the stinger than from the inside of the stem.

I've heard that too. I think it's purpose is to allow the steam to condense on it so the smoke doesn't bite, but if tongue bite is a pH thing then temperature isn't an issue.

Any thoughts on how to remove a lose stinger stuck in the pipe? I can shake it from the bowl half way down the shank, but not all the way out.

FWIT, I know many guys who collect stingers. I'm not sure why but I guess it's the same as those who collect thimbles. As for removing the loose stinger, I'd start with a needle nose pliers. Failing that take it to a hardware store and ask what to do. There has to be some tool to get the rascal out.

Needle nose pliers is my next attempt. I hesitate because I don't want to mar the pipe. I really like the Big Ben Pipo, its a brow burner, but its a really nice smoke and carries easy.

I would suggest getting some dental picks, hardware store might have them. This will allow you to potentially hook the stinger and drag it out, eliminating most things that might harm the pipe. Many of my recently acquired estate pipes have stingers and they will all be removed. They are even less use to me than filters and more of a PITA. If anyone wants them for any reason (put them next to your thimbles?) feel free to let me know.

Try shining a light down the bowl to see if there is a something stopping the stinger from moving. If not possible take a drill bit about the size of the draft hole in the stem and work it by hand down the stummel. This should help clear a blockage that is stopping the stinger. Or you can sent it to a professional for repair.

Like the drill bit (small) idea as it seems like it would put less outward force against the mortise.I still pull out an old fashion plug in drill on occasion- the trigger is more sensitive and you can really slow down the speed. Warning-completely spitballing here.

The liquid that sometimes comes out of pipes is nasty and very acidic. Some tobacco produces more of the liquid and some pipes let more of the liquid through. We should come up with a name for the liquid like "pipuke". I assume the stinger is to keep this liquid from coming up the pipe but I have never had a pipe with a stinger that I recall.

Ron, I think I have one of those around here somewhere. That is something I can try.

Got a couple of ideas don't know how well they will work.
