An acquaintence of mine knows my fondness or animals (other than cats), and his wife developed severe allergies to animal hair. He asked me if I could adopt Bilbo the Ferret along with the cage and all the accessories...being the softy that I am, and knowing that my granddaughters would love him, I agreed. I had a black footed ferret in the mid seventies when I lived in Colorado...this one is far more docile, he pees in a litterbox, and poops on a paper towel, the donor said he has never gone outside the cage...this guy is really mellow, and acclimated to my American Bulldog that has the personaliy of "Chance" from homeward bound if you have ever seen that movie. The previous owner clued me in on how to keep the Ferret musk scent at a mininmum, and I didn't notice any smell when at his home. He is five years old so he doesn't have many years left on him, but it will be a good opportunityto see how it works out....He already beats the hell out of the pet alligator I used to have...Wally-gator was mean as piss and was always looking to relieve me of a finger.

A funny story about my Black footed Ferret. Back in the 70's, I had a cousin anmed Sonny that was really shady, he got busted for burglary and the judge gave him an ultimatum...Vietnam or prison, he chose the former. After he got out of boot camp he got a cushy job installing phones on the base, back where I lived and his hometown Fort Carson! One night he was tripping on acid and my mom let him stay in our spare room...he was rocking out to Uriah Heep or Deep Purple, and my Ferret had found his way into the room. He scurried across my cousin that was accustomed to sleeping in the raw, my cousin jumped up and threw the ferret against the wall...the ferret slinked out under the door. We woke in the middle of the night to a blood curdling scream, it seems the Ferret sneaked back under the door to seek revenge, and bit my cousin on the head of his bald headed weasel...he said he felt the teeth meet when it happened. The Ferret slunk back under the door and hid until my cousin was gone...he was a pretty smart chap, and a vindictive one at that. Post military, Sonny never got his act together, after a string of thefts, he got a felong conviction and spent most of his life in the state pen. The moral of the story...If you like your weasel, never mistreat a weasel.

"Relieve me of a finger" made me laugh. Ferrets are funny little creatures. I always wanted 1 or 2 but that's as far as I ever got.

Congratulations. I think. Will he get to leave the cage if he wants? I don't know how much mayhem ferrets can get up to. Assuming you don't drop acid and get nekked.

I have never went commando, and he will be caged at night....subject to DOT random drug tests, even if I wanted to drop acid (which I don't), I prefer eating over unemployment. There are some steps, and the previous owner would open the door and let him come and go as he wanted...typically frolic for 15 minutes and head back to bed is his routine...Duke seems really cool with him, if he was a cat, he would already be dead though....Duke hates cats. I always wondered if Sonny's rap sheet included that "Identifiable mark" under scars, tatoo's etc....

When my nephew was about 13 or 14 he "volunteered" at a local pet store. One afternoon,I had gone to pick him up from work. The store had a nice deep round cage set right inside the door with eight young ferrets in it.Of course there was a sign in plain sight that said "Don't pet or pick up the ferrets".So I picked one up and proceeded to scratch his ears.Real pretty little fellow, nice and loving. He snuggled right into my hand. Then BIT into the web between thumb and fore finger.Little bugger was hanging there with pure EVIL in his eye. After about a minute and a half, translate and hour,I informed my nephew this was no longer cute, please remove the "ro----dent".My nephew still laughs at me over that. Congrats on your new friend,I really do like ferrets but I have cats who are just as spiteful it seems/

Glad he gets out to play. I'm having major stray cat issues. Did you know cats can make a bunch of little cats if you don't spay them?

Congratulations on your new addition. The story from the 70s was priceless - absolutely brilliant.

Glad he gets out to play. I'm having major stray cat issues. Did you know cats can make a bunch of little cats if you don't spay them? Which is why I have a dozen here. Started with two strays in the barn. Now five in the house at night during Winter with the rest lurking outside. Many trips to the Vet for spaying/neutering. Not much trouble but they eat a lot. Four feeders outside. This brings in the circuit racoon and a nightly skunk which adds to the "enjoyment". Skunk has become nothing more than a bushy tailed cat. They all eat together out of the same bowl. Rabies is not much of an issue in these parts, I am told by Vets but always a concern.

Almost killed one stray, so started feeding it. It became them. Them became one inside cat, random and ever-changing outside cats. Indoor cat started producing smaller cats but they die a lot. Got an appointment at vets, but made more smaller cats so I had to cancel and lost my deposit. Then it made more smaller cats. Then some outdoor cat left two just-borns outside the back door.
So, now have one indoor cat I don't mind. Three four month old survivors I kinda mind. Mess of new cats whose eyes just opened I mind. Two abandoned tiny ones whose eyes aren't open yet I also mind. I believe that comes to infinity. Must see vet before any more show up.
I'd trade every damn one for Charlie's ferret.

Feral cats can be a real problem here, because they act as a coyote attractant.... one problem begets another.

An old roomy of mine had 2 ferrets. One of them hated shoe strings for some reason and would come from under the furniture unexpectedly to attack them. Other than the occasional scratch to an ankle, I thought it was hilarious!

I have known a couple of ferrets that were pretty cool creatures, friendly and loved to play. Now the Savanna Monitor we had was a big mistake.

I also wanted a monitor when I was about 20. Im glad I grew out of that. Before that I had 2 iguanas. One was 5' and the other was 3 1/2. They were pretty cool to have. The bigger of the 2 would come out of its cage and lay on the back of the couch, with my dog, in the sun. Both iguanas always went back to their cages to use the bathroom. A ball python came after the iguanas, pretty neat, but pretty boring.
Reading all the replies and stories about ferrets makes me want one all over again. Especialky since for the first time in my adult life, I am petless

Good on you Charlie for taking on the little guy. Hope it works out for both of y'all. Thanks, he has acclimated well. He is kind of long in the tooth, five years old but we already figured that his previous owners didn’t have it set up for this burrow creature to get his 12 hours of sleep. We had some unused blackout curtains that fit the cage nicely, and Duke seems pretty cool with him.
