Have you had much luck in finding pipes at flea markets? Do you have any good flea markets nearby where you live?
I have had mixed success in finding pipes at flea markets over the years. Found a bunch of nice Petersons at one in the early eighties and a Dunhill at one in the late 90's. Just a couple of years ago I found a Comoy's Tradition billiard at a flea market in Knoxville for $10. The girlfriend and I are going to a big flea market in Jonesborough, TN next weekend; the advertisement said there were over 400 vendors.

Many years ago my father sold gold pocket watches one week end a month at a flea market in Knoxville. Also one week end a month in Nashville. I've never had much luck finding good pipes at flea markets or antique stores.

There is a huge one near camp that I go to once or twice a summer and if I do find a pipe, it's a Kaywoodie or Grabow with a chewed stem and its covered in grime and they're asking what a new pipe costs.

It is always worth a shot, but it is best to have the expectation that and Redwine has.... but every once in awhile, you just never know. San Jose Ca. Used to have one of the greatest flea markets... eventually it evolved into a place where everyone sells the same Chinese junk, probably from the same importer, and you haggle all day. There is a weekly flea market near Mesa/ Apache Junction, burned up Grabows are all I have seen.

...a while back, I would find pipes worth purchasing... these days, the dealers seem to think every old, beat-to-s**t pipe is worth $50 or more...

I've tried 2 antique stores. One didn't stock pipes, and the other had a rack with 4 pipes selling for £45 - but the state of the pipes were shocking. It looked like someone had shat in them and waited a few years before handing them over to the antique store.

Its because they do a search on google and see a few Dunhills or Castello pipes and think their junk is also collectable. My buddy was bragging about his pipe collect that once belonged to his grandfather. I was a little hesitant to tell him they were all Grabows and worth $20+S&H on ebay. haha It actually bummed me out that he was more interested in monetary value than he was in his grandfather's pipes.

I've had more luck with yard sales than flea markets but it's fun to look around either way!

Down here in South Louisiana at flea markets all you find is fleas, and when you see something a little worth while , they want more than the new price.

Never been to one but I hope to change that soon. ...might be enjoyable for other reasons, but don't expect to find anything worthwhile in terms of pipes... you never know, though...

There is one antique store I go into looking for pipes and such.Owner is real reasonable, and willing to haggle a bit. That's where I found the Chadwick cutty.Last year I picked up 4 pipes from him for $20,they needed some TLC but I got a nice small Bruce Peters pot that is one of my favorite pipes. He did have a DG that the vendor thought was worth $25, the bowl was split almost all they way to the shank.
A friend of mine has inherited a few of his Grandfathers pipes, and I've been cleaning them for him.So far a 3/4 bent Frank Billiard,a DG Buldog,a KB&B billiard and a couple with no stampings. He does have one Bent Bob's,a Savinelli second, that I would love to steal from him.Sweet little full bent panel job. But he has lot of fond memories associated with those pipes and doesn't even ask what they might sell for.

At the very least, there are usually enough people selling fresh produce and homemade jerky to make the time spent sorting through other people's junk worth while.

The flea markets around here, and the surrounding communities, have not been a productive endeavor for me.
I've had more luck with the antique shops, estate sales, CraigsList, facebook Garage Sale, and ebay.
And as you might expect, the pipe forums.
