Maybe I'm just an old man remembering things the way they weren't. It seems to me though that in days gone by folks lived their own lives and let others do the same. When did it come to be that people got the idea that they could force their values on others? If some one had told grandpa that he couldn't smoke his pipe they would have found out how tough an old man could be.I get really tired of reading that I'm a bad influence on some one's kids. It's OK for them to watch violence and sex on TV and Video Games as long as they don't see Santa or Frosty smoking a pipe.My father once told me that the older I got the more I would feel like I didn't fit in.Maybe I really am an old man remembering things the way they weren't. I'm beginning to believe though that my father was right.

wish I had the wording skills to even embelish on the above. Just have to agree all the way & say I might even have you & most others beat on the "old" part. Again....if anybody here can beat 12/40, I be glad to lose my "seniority"! heh heh

In 7th grade my Social Studies teacher smoked his pipe in the classroom during study hall. I could have stayed there all day. That scent is permanently embedded and I fondly recall it often. Today, well no chance for that to ever happen again. Kinda sad.

Well stated Larry. People just don’t get it, anymore. It’s not just smoking. If I share a different opinion than the ‘majority’, I become the enemy and ostracized. It’s a sad commentary on the current state of human affairs.

And much of social media perpetuates that behavior, often in the worst ways. I had a jerk complain that I had a pipe in my mouth while holding my cat in a Facebook. "Aren't you afraid of what it'll do the cat you claim you love?" I responded, "Aren't you old enough to mind your own business and learn not to interfere in somebody's life? Somebody you don't even know? What gives you the right to be so judgemental? Who are you to decide how others should live? Mind your own business, and don't you dare tell me how to treat my cats or live my life." Then, I defriended her. I don't care if she is a fan of my art work, I'm not taking that crap from anybody.

I agree it's been going on a long time just worse now. I got married, wife went to beauty school, got hired on Exxon Refinery and Chem plant as employee, bought a starter house in small subdivision. Started building extension for a small beauty shop in back of house. Couple days later was informed of a Subdivision meeting against the Beauty Shop. Got busy getting info on neighbors, went to meeting and informed them one worked on cars at his house, one did tax returns , one did interior drapes, One had a daycare at home, and so on and on. I finished with, you are are all middle aged or older, I'm a young buck with a damn high paying job, take me to court and we'll see who wins. The beauty shop went up with nary an objection. Human nature has been for shite and getting a lot worse.

I can still remember a time when even if you differed from someone politically, it didn't automatically make you enemies.. . . . . something to do with Freedom as I recall.

There are people that think it is their job to control others, and if you don't bend to what they think is what is for your own good, they will use whatever tools they can to accomplish their goal, by guilting corporate America and politicians to go along with them.
In the Fox/Disney thread, the mindset of that activist spells it all out. His resume says that he has spent his life in academia, and Non profits...but he can live in Fairfax California where the median home price is $895,000.00...People like that are funded by some real scumbags that think it is their duty to put the chains on others.
I just want to be left the hell alone and wish others would do the same.

As a young man (35) I've always complained about many of the same things and the way people and media are now compared to when I was a kid. Ive been told a lot that I'm going to be one hell of an old man.
I will always believe that most of the world's problems are due to over population.
The type of people you are talking about dont get to stay in my life for very long. I take opinions and criticism pretty well, but dont force your views on me or tell me I'm wrong for having mine.

It is extremely rare that I ever physically come into contact with such people here in Arizona, what chaps my hide is crackerheads that either through bureaucratic means or legislatively believe it is their job to rule over me like a peasant...hard to get rid of them parasites.
Like the old song says "How much does it cost, I'll buy it
The time is all we've lost, I'll try it
But he can't even run his own life
I'll be damned if he'll run mine'

...I agree with it all...and its getting worse daily...as a Native I'm use to hearing a lot of comments...my children even carried messages home from school...tell your old man, "the only good Indian is a dead one"...so, the judgements keep coming and I tell my children...smile, and go on about your business...

Excellent thread.
Being a definite Live and Let Live sorta fella I have grown weary and now completely intolerant of those that demand that we acquiesce to their opinion, all the while trying to marginalize, diminish or discredit those that would dare have a differing opinion or belief.
Sadly this epidemic is everywhere, quite evident on other pipe forums.
The "Offended" class, as I like to call em, somehow feel empowered or entitled to "set you right" whenever they sense that you don't drink the same koolaid they do.
Their snarky and insulting behavior is loathsome and I would dare say that they would be much less brave when not afforded the presumed anonymity or safety their keyboard and internet connection provides. In other words, they are keyboard cowards and don't have the stones to talk to you, face to face, the way they do online.

This is one of those great non-partisan almost-"political" threads we can all agree on - even if we might be thinking of different examples of how others want to control our lives. That in itself is good grounds for some mutual human understanding.

Just don't give in to the temptation of a verbal match with these people. They will always win. They get you to come down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Even 20 years ago it seemed that way. People can’t mind their own business today because social media has given a mouth to anyone to guide others (often incorrectly) into something that is healthier. Buddy I got news for those people. Vegans die young. I apologize to you fine folks if you think that what I said sounds too harsh. I don’t like being politically correct and I do have a mouth without remorse

That is totally ridiculous..."judge a man by the content of his character, not the color of his skin" comes to mind. Some people are mental stooge's and do not deserve to be teachers. My grandmother was native American, her tribe was wiped out, and was adopted along with her mother into a catholic mission that gave her the name of Mary Magdalene Chavez, because in her words "It was worse to be a native American than it was to be a black person at that time" It is sad that ignorance and stupidity still reigns in the peanut sized brain of some fools....My grandmother was the most gracious, loving person that one could ever know. When we laid her to rest in Howard Colorado so many years ago, as the casket was lowered, an American Bald Eagle drifted directly above her grave....everyone got goosebumps on that exclamation point on her life. Her son who was shot up on Omaha beach only later to find himself at the battle of the bulge summed it up well....."That shite doesn't happen by mere chance". Even a child as young as my daughter was able to understand "content of character" some people stagger throughout life without understanding the concept.

Giving support to Trailboss, my wife's Father was from Oklahoma full blooded Blackfoot. We did some search on his family useing census reports and talked to some real old folks who said when the census came around Indians would put down they were black as it was worse to be an Indian.

I am lucky to have been born in Houston. I am not saying that we are totally free of racial prejudice, but we try. I posted the following on another forum, but I think I belongs here.
We have a Vietnamese friend who has an annual crawfish boil for family, friends, and clients. We always have a great time at these, and you really get to see how cosmopolitan Houston is. There's people of every shade and color, from every continent, laugh and joking and eating crawdads, corn, potatoes, spring rolls and hummus, washed dry with Texas beer. All the multi colored kids playing together in the pool, or sitting on their parents lap learning how to eat a mud bug. I hope that every day in heaven is like that.
