You know those people who cough and hack and wave their hands in front of their faces and cross the street to avoid your evil tobacco smoke? Well, I've been one of them recently! I've had two annoying colds in a row, and with the last one I've found that if I'm walking behind a cigarette smoker and inhale the second-hand smoke, it triggers a hacking fit and irritates my sinuses like hell. Plus, the smell is revolting and clings to my clothes.
Funny thing is, though, it hasn't happened with cigar smoke. I haven't been around any pipe smokers but I wonder if that would also be less offensive than cigarette smoke. But knowing that cigarette smoke really can cause such an unpleasant physical reaction, I wonder if people just assume pipe/cigar smoke will as well, and act accordingly?
Whatever, I do have empathy for people who don't want to breathe my second-hand smoke on the rare occasions that I smoke in public. We all think in terms of our rights being infringed upon when we can't smoke where we like. But I should also have the right to breathe air that's not contaminated with chemical- and carcinogen-laden cigarette smoke.
Discuss.

Some folks have breathing problems and any smoke can bother them.I try not to smoke where that could happen..I knew a fella who banned smoking in his clothing store. He said that women wouldn't buy clothes that they said smelled like smoke.A lot of it is a result of folks who have been programmed that smoke is bad. I've had folks on the street walk away from me when my pipe wasn't even lit. Some of it is real though. If I get cigarette smoke in my face I start sneezing.

I understand their point of view. I don't smoke in my own house (and I live alone). And even in places that allow it (like the open air restaurant I was at earlier today), I make a point to take a walk to smoke and isolate myself from the rest of humanity.

I would agree with you. While I would like to be able to go wherever I want and have my pipe, i don't see why my preference trumps that of someone who would like to go wherever they want and not breathe in smoke.
I therefore only smoke in my back garden or at a smoking area if I'm out.
But it's also interesting that if you had a reaction to cigarette smoke, maybe of those people who overreact to our smoke, some of them are actually reacting in the same way...I.e. they can't help it.

Pipe tobacco does not have the 500 chemical additives of cigarettes nor the burning paper, but the general (media groomed) public does not know that.

I completely understand where you're coming from. Even when I smoked cigarettes I wouldn't smoke them if I was downtown walking with other people around. If I felt that I absolutely needed one, I would walk down one of the small side streets where no one else was. Even as a smoker, I knew how bad they smelled, once I quit, the smell has became even worse. I smoke my pipe once in a while in the morning while I'm walking to work, but no one is around. Other than that, I haven't used it in "public."
I like fresh air as much as a non-smoker so I understand where they're coming from.
As far as flapping their arms and completely avoiding it, it's a bit much. Although, I do believe it is programmed in our brains to avoid smoke, like most animals. It doesn't mean you have to make a scene and make the smoker feel like they're in the wrong.

I never remember anyone complaining about smoke in the sixties or seventies.... incrementalism in the war against tobacco has certainly been effective. I only refrain from smoking wherever it is prohibited, and try not to puff if someone is walking into a cloud I might produce.

To me it's a rights balanced with responsibility. I've always viewed smoking like driving a car or owning a business. You have a right to drive a car, but you have a responsibility to drive it safely. If you own a business, especially a manufacturing business you have a right to be in business, but you have a responsibility not to pollute the air and water. Same thing with smoking. I always felt that I have the right to smoke a pipe or cigar, but have the responsibility to see that other people don't have to breath it. I don't know maybe that's too simplistic.

You’re breathing radiation, lead, emissions, brake dust, and 1,000 other pollutants. All rice is full of arsenic, as are cruciferous vegetables, dark meat fish, beer and wine. Burned potato is full of acrylamide and so is toast, like tobacco smoke. Live a little. Even your tap water is killing you off. Well water? Much more arsenic.

My father smoked a pipe throughout my childhood and I have to say that I really didn't like sitting in a cloud of smoke in the house, car, restaurants, etc. If it particularly bothered me, I'd tell him and he'd crack the window in the car or temporarily put down the pipe in the house. He would usually do so while telling me how much he loved the smoke from his grandfather's cigar when he was a kid, but he was a gentleman.
I smoke much less than my father did and make a point of not smoking in the house, car, etc. I generally smoke in solitude where my wife and kids can visit, but don't have to stay if whatever I'm smoking bothers them.

While I hate to discremenate against cigarette smokers, I personally believe pipe smoking is a lot more pleasant on the nose. I smoke in my house but usually keep to my study but it's more for the tone of the room than keeping it from other rooms.

I’m grateful for a whif of second hand cigar and pipe tobacco smoke. Sometimes I even enjoy cigarette smoke. I find vape-smoke offensive. The faux coughing is irritating and occasionally I hack back at them. But I say live and let live.

Old Grandad or Makers Mark, Zach? Nerf the world just means to put everything into a protective little bubble. Nerf, as in the foam footballs and sporting goods. Nah, no drinking. I have not had any alcohol save for one beer Since December 26th. I’m big into bodybuilding these days and been very healthy with everything diet related.

Take out a pipe and put it in your mouth at a picnic or outdoor event. Don't even light it. See who complains about the smell.
