Out of the hundreds of tins and bags of pipe tobacco I have opened in the past, I have discovered mold only a handful of times. I suppose my win/loss average is pretty darn good. However, I find myself avoiding buying fresh tins of the blends of pipe tobacco I dumped because of the fuzzy stuff. This is a bummer, because one of the blends on my NO BUY list happens to be a favorite. Finding mold on these very few tins has influenced the build of my large cellar.

...are you sure it's not just "bloom", Cap?

...are you sure it's not just "bloom", Cap? It was definitely not bloom, unfortunately. The several times I've discovered mold in tins, it was fuzzy (or hairy).

What blend got moldy on you?
Discussing the name allows us smokers to see if others have had the same issue, and if it was just a production run limited to a single batch.

...doesn't seem to be that common, but I have had trouble with tins aging, especially the square ones...

...doesn't seem to be that common, but I have had trouble with tins aging, especially the square ones... At the 2016 West Coast Pipe show, I asked Greg Pease about his thoughts on mold...he was surprised that it doesn't happen more often than it does, I reckon that you think about all the variables with moisture and the chemistry in the leaf, that makes sense. A bummer when it haappens...yes, but since I don't pay European prices, I am not going to sweat it out. I decided not to send my C&D small batch blends in when they did a voluntary recall.

The GL Pease website mentions mold and it reads quite a bit like your comment above. That is, it happens.

However, I rather not mention the tins/blender in the post. There have only been a few moldy tins up to this point. But those few tins have informed my current and future purchases. A big chunk of my cellar is tinned, so who knows what will be discovered when the caps are pulled.

I hope that you don't find anymore unpleasant surprises, but by all means when you do, contact the blender, give them the dates you bought it and when opened, average year round temperature you store it at..... this information helps them to better address the issue going forward

Not mold, but rust. I had to throw away 2 tins of Kingfishers because the inside of the tins had rust in them. I almost cried.

It's things like this that almost puts me off cellaring too much in case I waste a lot of European money. ...it's relatively rare in my experience... Definitely agree. If I calculated the numbers, the rate of finding mold would be well under 1%. However, those times I've found mold have changed the way (the blenders/blends) I build my cellar. That is what I was most curious about in this thread. Does anyone else have the "once bitten, twice shy" approach to pipe tobacco buying.

My experience is nill on opening aged tins. I can see myself taking that blenders stuff off my to buy list. We have a large selection in the states that a few less wont dent my list of blends to try.
