We have a 'like' button and that's it.
But often there are posts that have content that is perhaps sad or not nice (e.g. someone has been wronged in some way and is sharing it), and while I don't LIKE the sadness or what has happened, I can perhaps empathise with the post or I appreciate that it has been shared. If that is the case I will hit the 'like' button.
I just want to be clear - sometimes when I 'like' a post it can be because I like the content or it can be because I appreciate what has been said and the fact that time has been taken to share.

Have had similar thought, but I think the universality is understood. A plethora of buttons portraying feelings would be a bit much.
*sidebar: Like totals used to subtract when I transitioned from recent threads to WAYS as an example. That bug seems to have been fixed and also the WAYS bug where a Like would double, seems to have been remedied.

I agree that a plethora of emotions isn't helpful. I'm always careful not to offend (at least when I don't mean to), so I wanted to put my approach in writing.

I agree. I always think of the "Like" button as dual purpose, in that you like or appreciate the post and/or comment to the post, and, in the event of a sad type of event being posted, I think of the "Like" button as one to indicated to the OP that I have read and noted their post. Sometimes, I've simply have not "liked" the OP, but have comment down the thread chain...

There is another dimension regarding Like: It takes a Like to get a Like, is my general rule of thumb. You don't have to like a tobacco posted in WAYS for example, but the Like acknowledges that members participation and contribution to the Patch.

The "Like" button for me is a general affirmation of the post.
Should someone post that their dog died, their wife ran off with a cigarette smoker, they contracted leprosy, and was replaced in their job by a chimpanzee, the "Like" button does not indicate I approve of their distress but support them in their time of tribulation.

Wow Tosh.... did you have to use my pm to you about my distress as an example in this thread? Not cool!

Brilliant! toshtego, that reminds me of a joke... What do you get if you play a country and western song backwards? You get your wife back, you get your dog back, and you get your truck back.

Wouldn't mind the truck................ For me the like button is saying "Thanks for sharing". Good news or bad,I appreciate that we can share our lives with others and get advice, support or sometimes a bit of laughter.

Since the club has grown (and truly like a club) I can't keep up with all the posts. Sometimes my like means I read them all in a thread, sort of as a bookmarker. like when I was posting in WAYS. I do use it as an "I Understand, like, agree" button. In other words, if I am not clicking the like button there are many reasons, but "not liking" is not one of them.
As for receiving likes, It's nice. If nothing else it signifies someone read the post. But I also understand that trying to click every post in a thread is not easy.
I think people know how I feel about them, the ones I am more familiar with. I hope they know they are special to me and the click or lack thereof is not a measure of that liking.

I use the "Notifications" to keep up with quotes.I can be a very disagreeable old coot, and I like to know when I screw up and really tee someone off.I don't want hard feelings to get in the way of good arguments. If by chance someone reading this has been offended by my remarks,Please accept my apologies.

I have weaned myself from liking posts. I pretty much enjoy all the content on the forum, and find that liking everything ends up being redundant, and if I take the time to like Pasquale’s post and not Alphonse’s... Alphonse might get the the wrong impression, but it is simply of time restraints, real or imagined.

I have decided to become a bit more judicious in my likes. I think that liking a post makes a bit of a statement, like, Hey! This is a really good post or I feel your pain, or I agree, etc etc. Liking every post takes that away. I will continue to like the hell out of the WAYS thread posts, because what's not to like about somebody smoking a pipe? That is a statement in itself.
