Every time I go to break in a new cob I'm reminded of just how fantastic they really are. I often find myself wondering why I spend so much on briars, when the trusty cob always smokes just the way I like. Sure, plastic stems don't last forever, but kinda like how they develop tooth imprints. After a while it's like they fit like a glove. And when they do wear out, a fresh stem is less than a buck. Not knocking the briar, but there is just something about a cob that just works for me. Simplistic, minimalistic really, but completely functional and budget friendly. Anyhow, yeah, cobs are awesome.
Tried a few new blends this week and one really stood out to me. John Patton's Storm Front is one hell of a smoke. I have never really gotten into burley, after an unpleasant experience with Haunted Bookshop very early in my pipe smoking journey. But, I am always up for anything with cigar leaf in it. I'll write up a full review soon, but for now I will just say that since the first bowl, I can't stop reaching for this one. My wife finds the scent tolerable, even pleasant, and that is a rarity. The smoke is thick and foggy, but mild and tasty. No bite, seriously, not even if you cheef the crap out of it. And, it burns to nothing but ash. Storm Front in a Country Gent, very quickly climbed the ranks off my personal favorites.

Thanks for that, Jason. Storm Front is a great blend. Simple, smooth and tasty. It's a regular for me and has become a fast favorite as well. Darin, 4noggins. John Patton blend... great price too.

I love it when you get a fresh cob and you can taste the corn, and as you smoke it the oils (or whatever it is) seeps out the bowl giving the glaze. John R, (Phx rocks) suggested to the proprieter of the place our club meets that he needed to carry MM pipes. He has mostly basket pipes in the 30+ range, and if a new smoker buys one and it is a bad smoke...he has a first ruined smoke...in an inexpensive cob, it won't be the fault of the pipe if things go bad. I will have to try the stormfront...that incidentally is the name of a neo-nazi skinhead website.
