I am wondering what pipes you have all smoked that were fabulous clenchers? I bought an oom paul and do not like how close the bowl is to my nose.  Seems like I am inhaling smoke every time i turn around. I like a to clench when working in the garage. |

I have a Ropp Golf Bulldog that is lightwieght (short stemmed) and clenchs well. I tend to hold pipes with my lips but this one is better held with the teeth.

I've always used small bent MM cobs. I'm not fond of using nicer briars, as the possibility exists that it could fall out or get knocked out of my mouth. MM's plastic stems are easy on the teeth, and cheap to replace. Just a suggestion...

A smallish cob makes for a nice clencher (to me anyway).

Tough to beat bent cobs for clenching. Bulldog briars are top shelf too except I use softies with those.

I think oom Pauls are great for clenching because they hang effortlessly. I kinda like the closeness to my nose. Other than that, I find anything fairly light with a comfortable bit, straight or bent is fine.

My best clencher is a Peterson 268 (Zulu). Not much of a Zulu shape but a nicely balanced pipe. A good while back I read an interview with Rich from 4Noggins. (This was way before his much lamented election meltdown!) He was asked what pipe he used while working and, as I recall, he said it was a Peterson 268.

Bulldogs, Rhodesians, Bings, Canadians, Dublins, and Peterson pipes with p-lips, though I know some don't like them. I prefer clenchers, and cob stems are easy to damage, and I'm not paying bucks for forever stems for them. But, they obviously are clenchers.

After disdaining them for years, I finally got on board with the P-Lip, especially bent. My ultimate and favorite style to clench is the Dental Bit. This allowed me to appreciate Falcons more and a Dental Bit Duncan is used when I need to task hands free.

My favorite clencher is a savinelli 311 poker. I love to smoke it while working in the workshop. Plus it is also a good sitter if you need to set it down.

My Devil Anse is a good clencher. At 4 inches, it doesn't have much leverage against the teeth. At 26 grams, weight isn't an issue.  |

For a clencher, I almost always go to a cob. None of mine have anything other than the original stem. If they get too ratty, replacement yellow or black, are cheap and readily available. Otherwise, any of my pipes with a flatter bit, and a shallower bowl are my preference, because they balance well for me. A bit of a bend is good too.

I don't always clench but when I do cobs are my go to.
I have a habit of always taking the pipe out of my mouth and holding onto it then puffing on it take it out again.repeat the process.

Given a reasonable weight, it's the bit not the pipe. I agree completely ! A thin Saddle bit is by far the easiest clencher out there. |

Seems to me a Bent Cavalier with a long shank would put the bowl well below the jaw and close to inline vertically with the clinch point.....see my avatar for a reference to my rationality.

This^^^ Although I am trying to be easier on the bits of my cobs because I like how they look when the amber stems darken. I have replaced all of my cob bits with the $.59 Danish bits from Aristocob just because I like they way they look and they are cheap I also bought a Forever Stem and use it in my Apple Diplomat but that is not a good clenching stem, so that pipe is a sit and contemplate smoker now.  |

For me, either a nosewarmer with a wide comfortable stem or any one of my Oom Paul Pipes that rest comfortably on my beard that’s getting long!!! Need to keep an eye on my ash now👌

Any pre -1980 bent Comoy or GBD. Pipes are lightweight with a thin bit. Best clinching pipes I’ve found.
