What's the story with this? I thought I'd read the pipes were stolen from a hotel room. There were 2 incidents, the high end theft and a hold up. Did they get pipes in both? It seems the hotel one was targeted, so must be someone in the know. |

They got pipes and cash from the first victim. It was a crime of opportunity. I believe the high end theft was preplanned.

He planned on going to the show but backed out shortly beforehand. Means: Greenvile to Chicago is 14 hours...this cat never sleeps! He could call have hired some surrogates once he got there, had the wife copy and paste his pre-planned "what are you smoking" posts for an alibi, and been back home before the rest of us smoked four bowls! Motive: He is Jiminks...the guy is the Babe Ruth of pipe smokers...think he wouldn't want these pipes and the cash to feather his cellar? Opportunity: He said that increased workload caused him to miss the pipe show....He has probably been smoking so much that he orchestrated the backlog giving him the opportunity to construct such a nefarious scheme. This is right out of Marvel/DC.... he has had years to systematically watch how activities of this nature evolve, able to distill it down, and execute a plan. It's all about looking at the puzzle pieces and fitting them in. |

I believe the 2 high profile cases are one and the same. Rodrigo, a respected and well known EBay dealer, withdrew $40M from the local bank, walked to Potrillo's for lunch, and while walking back to Pheasant Run was accosted by the perps. They relieved him of the $40M and also took his backpack, which had a whole bunch of those super high end pipes. The hotel room/safe rumor was early in the show and was conflated with Rodrigo's loss. Separately, someone in the smoking tent lost his Cabela's case, which had several regular pipes in it.

Poor guy was lucky to have a change of underwear... probably too small for Jiminks or they would be gone too. |

Lestrout gave a good summary of the event. There are always police in the Megacenter during the show. I talked to one of them and he showed me pictures of some suspects. St Charles Police are very upset about this crime. It gives the city a bad name.

Not that I'm blaming the victim but who walks around with $40k cash, ever, for any reason? Maybe he had a good one but I've never even seen that much money in cash.
