First, cigarettes were promoted by the media and nobody minded. Later, they said, just go to smoking bar or a smoking area at a restaurant. Then, you should only smoke at the bar where folks are drinking and not eating. Then, only outside. Then, 50' from a doorway. Now, folks are offended and you're a pariah.
If they'd started with 50' down the street, it wouldn't have passed.

I was on a family vacation in Paris, in 2001. Back then, it was still legal to smoke indoors. After a day of mueseuming, my brother and I went to an outdoor cafe. I was probably drinking a glass of wine and smoking a Montecristo no. 2. Everything was relaxing, no one was uptight, i was content. Then I heard her. I thought she was in New York, but the obnoxious voice was unmistakable. : “Ugh, is that a cigar I smell?” It was Noxious Norma and she followed me to Paris.

If you want an obnoxious smell check out some of the perfume that some of these women who claim they can't stand the smell of smoke pay big bucks for.They don't care had bad it smells as long as some celebrity says she wears it.If they banned the stuff in public places these same women would say their rights are being taken away.

That's a really really interesting point! I wonder how toxic those scents are in comparison? Prob not as much but, but you never know. I wonder how that woman feels about breathing in the combustion products of scented candles. |

When i was working i drove a Non-Emergency Medical Transport Cab. I did a random survey of my passengers both male and female. I asked them which they found more offensive the smell of burning pipe tobacco or the smell of Perfumes/ Cologne. Then majority of them found the smell of the Perfumes/Cologne more offensive.
Think about this the essence of Perfumes/Cologne lingers for several hours if not days. Where as the essence of pipe tobacco has usually dispersed in a couple of hours.

This all reminds me of a dinner I had in Paris about '87 or '88 with a customer. We had just fired up a couple of Dominican Fuente Churchill's and a woman at a nearby table walks over and tells me, not asks, to put out my cigar. I told her, "when you wash off your perfume." My dinner companion roared, not least because I managed the exchange in half passable French.
