I tried packing a lot lighter than I normally do. I essentially gravity fed and pushed the tobacco down until it naturally packed and then added a wee bit more tobacco (a small pinch) and pushed it on top.
I had fewer relights. It was a shorter smoke but a more enjoyable one. I wasn't fighting with the pipe this time.
I'm still on a journey but the destination is coming into view.

Totally agree. It's better to enjoy a short smoke than fight an hour long fill. Also helps you develop quicker and keeps your interest up.

I have been using this "two fill" method, as opposed to the old "three fill" method and the result is better (and shorter) smokes. Also, for flakes, I tend to use the "fold and stuff" method, trying to leave a bit of an air space at the bottom. Seems like my flakes smoke better this way.

I don't generally tighten the load till I get to the top. Often I read that you fill the bottom loose, an each fill after you add a little more pressure. That only makes for a lot of relights.

I was reading the user's manual for one of "The Pipe" pipes a while back and it recommended packing the bowl very lightly for their pipes. I tried it on some other pipes and found that it works especially good for aromatics. Works good as in staying lit longer and not needing as many relights. For some reason, packing aromatics lightly also seemed to smoke drier.

I go for the longest smoke possible, so I will get my new buddy to try this with his Aromatics

If it comes down to a coupla re-lights vs packing a new bowl, I'll take the re-lights.
