I love aromatics. I love the smell of the tin and the smoke it produces. I started off with aromatics because of that.
However, as time has gone by, I'm finding myself enjoying latakia blends (for example) more than an aromatic.
I can see myself moving more towards English blends over time.
What's been your journey? Has anyone done the opposite?

yes opposite. Started off with cheap cob pipes, just about all of the OTC stuff (mostly floor sweepings burley with added "syrups" of various types. As income became better, upgraded pipes, discovered original 965 in former B&M store with great owner/"guidance counselor", gone were "mouth on fire" concoctions & for the most part, Englishes with varying % of Cypress latakia. Never looked back. Right now, opened is '06 C&D daVinci, unopened same year & 8oz cans of Blackpoint, Abingdon, Exotique & 10Russians. Will plan on finishing my smoking life with lata-bombs

I'd wager that the majority of us started out smoking aromatics. I did and then quickly moved through most of the OTC blends in the 1970's until settling in with latakia based blends. Over the past few years I transitioned to plugs like 3P's, Warrior, Revor, Salty Dogs, etc. I still love my English blends but I like to switch things around more now than previously.

I still love aro's,but also the Lat bombs and VaPers as well.I learned long ago to try anything once. I found a lot of great smokes as well as dinners by just being willing to try something different.

I got back into pipe smoking to try Syrian latakia, then moved to Oriental blends, and then some unreputable characters on this site convinced me to try aromatics. I'd say they're batting .500 on their suggestions.

I smoked my first aromatic in 2012. I began pipe smoking in 1997. I began smoking English and Vapers mostly. Eventually I lost my taste for English blends over a decade ago. Now I only smoke Va,Vaper and Vabur flakes and plugs along with a few aromatic blends that I enjoy.

New York City, early January ,1997
The first tobacco I ever purchased was a pouch of American Spirit. After lighting the bowl, I realized it was cigarette tobacco, so I went back to the smoke shop on West 4th Street. I really wanted the tobacco my dad smoked, but I didn’t know the name of it (Captain Black). I settled for a tin of EMP and went home to smoke. It had an interesting taste, but I enjoyed it.
I soon began smoking Captain Black. Occasionally, I would buy a two ounce bag of Barclay Rum from Barclay Rex. Once in a while, I would smoke a bowl of Captain Black Cherry.
After 9 + years, I tried Davidoff Royal Blend. Soon I would smoke English blends exclusively. Last summer I acquired a taste for Virginia and Virginia based blends. Today I enjoy English, Virginias and Burley blends.

Thankfully I only smoke outside, and if she's with me she sits upwind... Sometimes opposite me.

It all began with Carter Hall for me circa 1991. I tried Capt. Black and a few bulk aro's but knew immediately it wasn't what I wanted. Similar to how I don't want flavored creamers in my coffee. Today I smoke mostly Va/Bur/Per combos with some Lat blends in the cooler months.

My first regular go to was Captain Spice from Tinderbox. I had been smoking pipes on and off a few years by then. I have quit for long periods of time, but came back over a year ago. I looked up all the possibilities of Captain Spice being under another name. On Magazonia there were two listed in different threads. Neither was right. So, I was experimenting with peach, vanilla, etc. Smoking Aros can be a fool's game. Often the one that you like doesn't work the next time. Thanks to scrooge , JimInks , @10furlongs and others I got good at differentiating the components, burley, VA, etc. I have come to love English and Straight VA, but the latter I need to keep the bowls short, as it can be harsh... as reported by a few here. scrooge taught me the worthiness of straight burley in Five Brothers. If I start my day with that the smokes that come later have flavors more easily detected. The biggest difference between then and now is I love all the different types.

I started buying an occasional tin because you smoked so darned much GLP when I first joined here. I ragged you about it until I bought some. Also bought some Hal o the Wynd because don smoked it a lot. It's still cellared. Been a great journey

A lot of different ways to go with this but, in short, Esoterica Dunbar and McCranie’s Red Ribbon have been my staples of late. Uhle’s burleys in cobs round out the trifecta.
I want to get back to some Lat in my meers but tend to only prefer this combo in cooler weather.
So much to do, so little time....

Some don’t because they can burn unevenly. I’ve never had any issues with them in a cob. They are also a little sweeter than some prefer. There’s definitely a topping I can’t quite put my finger on but I like it. Uhle’s are my go to Burley smokes.

Sweet Burleys are great. Funny that your love of that vinegar taste in McC was something I was afraid of and now love. Like I said, I learned a ton and I still am a few months shy of one year in here.

Their big three are Perfection Plug, 00 and 300. The latter is the sweetest of the lot. I can send a little in baggies of all, no worries. If I had to guess, I’d say the topping is maple but that could be entirely wrong. Just my take, be interested to get your’s.

I no longer like BRM. I like tobaccos that I never thought I would like, but I can't say that I have changed much. I thought I would hate OJK, but I like it. I tried Escudo my first year and it it still tastes awful 5 years later. I still like Davidoff Medallions, and CBR. My Radices still smoke any blends better than any other pipes. Laphroaig was my first single malt scotch and 20 years later it's still my favorite, same with Old Granddad bourbon. 55 years after I first tasted it, it is still the best. To me. Fried cornbread is still my favorite food after 68 years.

Primarily I crave stout Burley blends followed by VaPer's & Latakia blends. Lastly some days I want an aromatic. I really don't dislike anything but like some types of tobacco more than others. Mostly lean towards natural tobacco taste.

I started out with English blends and Burleys and there I stayed. I'm not the world's largest smoker of Ben&Jerry tobaccos, but I have become rather fond of Rattray's 'Exotic Passion'.

I started out smoking Latakia and Oriental blends, then added Virginias and VaPers, followed by Burley blends and a few aromatics. Most recently I've been on a Lakelands kick. Latakia blends don't currently appeal to me, but I happily bounce between the others with an emphasis on Burleys and Lakelands.

Years ago, I started out with Captain Black Regular (heaven forbid). I then moved on to other cheap, wet American-style aromatics such as Stanwell and MacBaren Sevens Seas blends, etc. Got tired of burning my mouth on these wet, flavorless aromatics trying to keep them lit, regardless of drying time and technique.
I eventually moved on to English/Balkan blends. They gave great flavor and smoked cool. I really liked them, but got tired of burning out my taste buds on Latakia, plus the cost of quality tins is a lot more expensive to get here. I still smoke Old Dublin and London Mixture from time to time, but not as much as before. From there I moved on to old codger blends such as Prince Albert and Carter Hall. They were affordable and smoked wonderfully, but I eventually got tired of the plain burley taste. I finally settled on Amphora blends as my main daily smokes, which I have been smoking for the past few years. They are what I call 'dry aromatics'. They are affordable, aren't sopping wet, have lots of flavor, good strength, a wonderful room note, and they smoke cool.
I am anxiously awaiting my shipment of Amphora Virginia. Can't wait!

For me the last year of smoking has been revolutionary.
As some of you have seen in my other posts, and I will explain again here (sorry), I learned to smoke pipe from my dad. Years and years ago.
I have been on and off a pipe smoker since the 1980's, taking a detour through cigars for several years, here and there.
Smoking pipe has changed from something I just did now and then without thinking too much about it, to something akin to a hobby. Smoking when i grew up was never the point. It was something you did while you tried to figure out what the heck the point was.
It still kind of is for me in a way, but i am talking about smoking a lot more than I ever have, and gone from a pipe or two a week, to several a day, from loyalty to one or two tobaccos to trying everything.
Sutliff Mixture 79 and a match blend of Brindley's Mixture, were my favorites, because that is what my dad and his brother smoked, and whatever store mixture the tobacconist recommended. Now I am addicted to... C&D Billy Budd Blonde, C&D Happy Days, War Horse, Navy de Luxe, Dunhill Elizabethan, Dunhill Mixture 965, H&H Concerto, and trying some things here and there.

My dad smoked a Latakia blend (haven't been able to discover what), so that's where I started and have stayed. He was a one-blend guy, though, and I like to try everything. I've found I like McClelland's oriental-forward blends most, followed by Germain's and SG.
I thought I hated all aros when I started, after being given a big sampler from a guy on another forum. Turns out Burley was the problem, and I gradually developed a taste for all kinds of ridiculous stuff like Firedance Flake, Molto Dolce, and various Boswell's. I enjoy the occasional Lakeland and like the occasional straight VA (mostly SG) but have not developed a taste for Burley or Perique at all.

Once upon a time, I thought Captain Black was the greatest tobacco in the world.
And I was content.
Then I discovered English/Balkan/Oriental blends and smoked those almost exclusively. I smoked Sobranie white and 759, as well as other English/Balkan/Oriental Blends.
And I was content.
Then I decided that I needed more variation, so I smoked English/Balkan/Oriental blends and vanilla aros, though not Captain Black.
And I was content.
Then I got tired of latakia and only smoked Danish Delight.
And I was content.
Then I started checking out Virginias.
And I was not content because I was on the search, and Virginias were schooling me.
Then I only smoked Virginias, VaPers, VaBurPers, and VaBurs.
And I was content.
Then I decided that I was missing English/Balkan.Oriental blends a little, though the thought of Latakia made my stomach heave.
And I was not content.
Then I started adding in some blends where Latakia is used in a more condimental amount.
And contentment returned.
Then I tried out a couple of non gooper aros and some OTCs.
And found some new aspects to contentment. There is something wonderful about a non fussy blend that smokes well and doesn't need special prep.
Now I smoke Virginias, VaPers, VaBurs, and VaBurPers about 90 percent of the time, have added a few Virginia blends that have some Oriental leaf, enjoy a couple of Aros on rare occasion, a few English/Balkan/Oriental blends, and a couple of OTCs.
And I am very content.

The coder blends are some of the most expensive now. 28-48$ for a 12-14 ounce tub. Don't get me wrong. I love my codgers and they are represented here. When you can buy the match blends for 25$ a pound that appears to be the bargain. If cost is keeping you from English, Sutliff Nightcap Match is a winner. Super Value English is another one. A tad less refined than Nightcap, but it makes up for it in flavor.
