Stuck my finger in my pipe to see how much tobacco was left in it.That's when I yelled ouch and stuck my finger in a glass of ice water I had sitting on my table. As long as I've been smoking pipes you would think that I would have learned by now..Any hardy souls here who can tamp with their fingers?

I only tamp with the finger once the pipe has gone out....

I've never been brave enough to try that. I always have my tamper or a long nail with me when I smoke my pipe.

My dad did; he never used a tamper. Then again, he didn't put his thumb very far down into the bowl.

I can, but try not too. My hands and fingers are calloused from work. My right index finger tip has no feeling in it because when I was young I thought it would be a great idea to touch the inside of a car cigarette lighter...

I'll use my finger when driving with a pipe. I also did the car lighter trick, but I then convinced my Brother that it was cold.He knocked the P*** out of me for that one.

If the bowl is on a low smolder you can get away with it, but still it is often a 50/50 proposition. Not as bad as cutting flesh off your fingertips, while trimming a pipe cleaner with scissors, though.

I'll often use my finger when the pipe is cold, that way I can feel how the pack is, whether it's too loose or too firm.

The car lighter seems to be a popular mishap... a co-worker said he did it too.. and ALSO convinced his brother to.

On the char light, I sometimes use the Zippo to knock down tobacco that is rising up. Either an edge or the entire lighter laid flat over the bowl, as the case may be.

Yeah, brother are cool things to have around.Mine would hand me a wire and then kick over the motor he was working on.Best one though by far,he came over to help me with a carburetor, loaded my tools and took off for a week.He did fix the dang thing, but he kept the tools.S'allright,I threw that many off in the trees cause of frustration.

I tamp with my finger when I'm outside and realize my tamper is not. haha I have callused fingertips from playing guitar, so that helps.
