I just baught this Stanwell Hans Christian Anderson on eBay for a bit over $200 with tax. It should arrive in about a week. Can't wait to break it in with a new tin of Presbyterian.

Congratulations with a great find. One of the two best-looking HCAs. The other is no. I, the Cutty. I've read several biographies on H. C. Andersen and some of his diaries; nowhere do they mention that he smoked a pipe.

This is the calabash? Looks like a good size - most calabashes seem huge. Does it have a shape number?

Beautiful pipe! I've always loved their looks, but am not a churchwarden smoker so the extra stem would be a waste of money for me. Still....

Stanwell special pipes do not, as a rule, have a shape no., but your pipe is very similar to the shape no. 162 - Calabash, designed by Jess Chonowitsch.

This pipe has both the long stem and the short one. So i can go from Sherlock Holmes to wizard in the blink of an eye. Lol

I have the 162, and also "had" this same HCA calabash (I'm crazy I know...I sold it off). The HCA version of this calabash stummel is a bit smaller. It may still technically be a 162...but I'm assuming Stanwell has a different shape # for it on record.
A fantastic pipe! My Stanwell is my very favorite smoking calabash.

He was not allowed to smoke a pipe in front of all the children he was writing for. Lol As soon as he had finished reading, the little buggers went out and smoked cigars behind the barn.

I have the tribute pipe, Stanwell made in honour of the Danish artist, writer, humorist and pipe smoker Robert Storm Petersen, called Storm P. It is also very similar to the 162, but doesn't have a shape number either. It has a self-portrait of Storm P. on the silver band and as far as I know, it only came in the sandblasted version.

An HCA pipe resting in the mouth of a father or grandfather while reading HCA’s stories is an acceptable practice.
Just smoke something other than Royal Yacht in it.
Nice looking pipe!
