Just curious as to what everyone prefers, or if it's more of a "I'll take what my favorite blend comes in" type of mentality.
Shag? Ribbon? Flake? Plug? Rope? Cake? etc...
Personally, I am still deciding on my favorite type as this is still fairly new to me, and I am leaning more towards shag and ribbon as they are easier and, in my experience, a little more forgiving for the pipe novice. I am however branching out and trying more flakes and cakes. Just wondering how everyone falls on this spectrum. Cheers!

Doesn't matter to me... I prepare all my tobacco's in an herb grinder to the desired consistency.

I'm finding flakes hard to dry and rub out and pack. They don't seem to smoke as well for me as ribbon cut, which I prefer. I seem to have that one figured out when it comes to packing.

Ribbon is best for smoking, IMO. Plugs win for ritual.

For loading and smoking I like ribbon cut the best. For storing I like ropes, plugs and flakes - they take up less space. For these forms, I usually touch them up in a blender or coffee grinder to get the desired consistency for smoking.

When I started smoking my pipes again last November, after decades of neglect, I would search Tobacco Reviews for ribbon cut only. It was all I knew, and I would look at flake, cake, and rope tobaccos in amazement and wonder why anyone would smoke that sort of tobacco. Then I discovered flakes and have been on a flake binge ever since. They seem to smoke better for me--maybe more of a reflection of the type of puffer I am--but they seem to smoke cooler than ribbon cut. I still enjoy some ribbon cut tobacco like EMP, Squadron Leader, Presbyterian, and a couple of aromatics, but most of my small "cellar" now consists of flake and broke flake tobacco. The only shag cut I have tried was Margate. It struck me as incredibly dry right out of the tin, and smoked like it had been soaked in jet fuel.

in the "ribbon cut" preference. However, easy to hand mangle something like PirateKake without having to dig out the grinder. Am still quite industrious in some ways, but at 77.5 yrs, enjoy being a lazy old fart when comes to ease of tobacco prep!

I like the ease of preparing and smoking shaq cut. Flake or plug seem to provide more flavor. Cube cut works best for me in cobs. I have a little food processor which will turn anything into ribbon cut which I do with some as well.

I guess I'm with Peter on this one, I like all of them. Most of mine are shag and ribbon but that's more of how they come than an attempt at a specific cut.

Flakes and fine-cut ribbon (Germain style). I'm a man of extremes, I guess.

My favorite cuts are flakes. But I also enjoy broken flakes, krumble kakes, ribbons, shag, ropes, plugs, coins. What am I forgetting.

Tobacco cuts are like family, you learn to live with them and devise the best method for you to achieve a good smoke.

I smoke'em all. Preferred are thick ribbons, ready rubbed, and the coarse cut a lot of C&D Balkan blends have. I like the taste of a couple of shags, but they burn like a field fire in August.

I've tried several cuts at this point and while I'm initially enthused with each I can say at this point that coins and cube are a hassle. The dot in the coin is too firmly packed to break up and smoke properly and so far none of my pipes burns cubes well. Shag is pretty bouncy, gets everywhere, and burns quickly but I did come around on flakes (although most come too large for my pipes though) and coarse cut. Ribbon is my favorite all around cut.

Flakes are my favorite cut when I am at home and have the time and place to prepare them. Out and about, a good ribbon cut is what I prefer, or already rubbed out flakes.

Ribbon.

Ribbon and flake; I have yet to try plug and rope. I have a love/hate relation with flake; I do think that I can taste a difference whether I tear it apart or use fold-and-stuff, but I have only got three pipes where I can use the latter method without gettng in trouble, that is, incessant relights, rearranging the tobacco, extensive use of improper language and the occasional shouting.

Cube. I like the way it burns, usually in a cob

Same here. I enjoy the varieties of tobacco’s and pipes...from Strang to Stokkebye coins, my most ornate or valuable to the simple cob.

Well think of this like you would a car. Some cars are built for comfort. Some cars are built for speed. And some cars are built for a comfortable speed.
If you each cut you will see.

Having been smoking a pipe since 1969 with as many blends as I've smoked I think I've smoked 'em all but my two faves have been Flakes and Ribbon cuts work for me!

The only one I really dislike is the big squarish chunks of Black Cav. Why? They jam up the pipe, prevent integration with the rest of the blend, and don't burn well.

I will take whatever shape that good blends come in. The only cut I have an issue with is the Crumb Cut and crumble Kake blends that tend to clog the draft hole. I solved this by putting a thin layer of an inoculous blend under it as a "screen". Works great.
