Ronv69,when I set the tobacco I'm going to smoke out on my drying plate I try to break down the larger pieces. And mix it in. I don't have many problems doing it this way.

I will take whatever shape that good blends come in. The only cut I have an issue with is the Crumb Cut and crumble Kake blends that tend to clog the draft hole. I solved this by putting a thin layer of an inoculous blend under it as a "screen". Works great. That's a great idea. Thanks for letting us in on your secret.

Not a bad idea, if you happen to have coffee beans around. The only whole beans we have are chocolate covered. I previously used the Denicool crystals for this, but it is a bit of a hassle. Worked great, though. I suppose clean pebbles would do the same thing.

I really don't have a preference. I have tins of various cuts, but there is something to be said for the ease of a geezer pack of ribbon cut tobacco when I'm on the go or don't feel like messing around with other cuts.

Plugs would be if they were more readily available in the us. So flakes it is.

Thought I'd resurrect this old thread since we have a lot of new members here.
So, what is your favorite cut of tobacco? Personally, I like flakes and plugs...flakes because you can cube them, rub them out, fold and stuff (something I just can't get right) and plugs because I like to play with the tobacco...Hey, I'm retired and need something to do. Ever try cutting G&H Dark Plug? Stuff is like concrete with a nic hit like getting kicked by a mule.

I've grown pretty partial to flakes. I dont have many and my favorites are not flakes but I like the convenience of them. Just fold and stuff (fold at the top). I havent tried any plugs... yet

In this order......Flake, Cake/Plug, ribbon cut. Not into the chopped blends.......burns fast and has a tendency of serious tongue bite!!!

If I have to pick just one I would have to choose plug and flake

For me flake/coin cut is preferable. I like the options it gives me.
Sometimes I'm in the mood for something that will burn forever and I can just stuff a flake in the pipe.
Sometimes I want to be lazy loading my pipe, I can just cube some up and drop the cubes in and roll on out.
Sometimes if I want to really get involved with the tobacco I can rub it out pretty well and treat it like a ribbon or shag.
They all have their pros and cons, but flakes give me some extra options. Not to mention they look nice in a jar. 😉

Ribbon followed by coarse. They are the easiest to pack and deal with in general. Cube cut is a bit of hassle to keep lit.

I never thought I'd say this, but ready rubbed. I try to ready rub my own plugs and stuff but its not the same.
I just really like the way that Edgeworth burns. Maybe its just the comfort of the burley bringing me back to my cigarettes days. But the way it burns is just .. bliss. So cool and slow.
