I'm not a mod, but I thought I'd share this thread for anyone who would like to know how to link to photos now that you can't upload them onto the forum anymore. If more space becomes available the mods can remove this thread. I've also put it in the general discussion section in case people don't browse the help section... thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/1483/post-photos

Space can be saved by tagging members with @, as opposed to overusing Quote and repeatedly reposting pic's. Additional space can be saved by sticking to a topic. As an example, What's In the Mail, is not a space for pic's of your car or yakking about the weather.

Good to know... I was going to quote you @truculentfrogs, but that would defeat the purpose.

Quoted text doesn't use that much, but the repeated posting of large photo posts, to reply in a single line, does.

I took @legend Lover's advice and created a Wordpress blog and store my pictures there. I then right click and copy image address then use the insert image button to post them. It was actually very easy to set up the blog and I use if for other sites too.
I do the same from pictures from the net, too, but I was unable to post one from Amazon today, so I saved it and then copied it to my "blog" then posted it from there and it worked.

Quoted text doesn't use that much, but the repeated posting of large photo posts, to reply in a single line, does. If I am responding to a long text, I typically erase everything in that quote but the first sentence, so as to clarify who I am responding to, and it makes for a much cleaner thread. It is a pain to see the same post quoted and re-quoted when accessing the website from a mobile device, even with just text.

I still have the habit from the old usenet days, only quoting the text, I'm replying to and no quoting photos. I just tried to register with imgur; all very fine, but when I clicked 'register', I got a blank page and nothing happens.
Strange.

Now I registered with PostImage and it seems to work, but the image is, er, huge. Needs resizing, I guess.

Time to delete some of the oldest stuff ... perhaps "What are you listening to" would be a good place to start with all those video files.

As an example, What's In the Mail, is not a space for pic's of your car or yakking about the weather. When you quote, there is no duplication of storage for the picture. The quote post just has a link to the file that was attached to the original post. The by far biggest thing that uses up server storage in attaching pictures to posts since that uploads the picture to the TBP server for storage. That’s why the recommended way to post pictures is to have them server from a photo hosting site and just use a link on the forum. Plus, it has the potential to create longer lived content. When the TBP server runs out of file storage space, sparks can get some back by deleting old attachment files, but that looses content. If there is a way to tell what thread an attachment goes to, attachments to the WAYS threads would be the biggest candidate for deletion since who reads old WAYS threads? However, I doubt the forum software is that smart. I suspect there’s just a directory with a whole bunch of picture files that just have one way references from posts.

Guys, Just to ease everyone's concern, the forum itself is NOT out of storage space. There is not need to delete threads, posts, or worry about quoting other users. This is not the space that is being used up. T What has reached it's limits is our "Attachment File Storage". That is used every time someone uses the "Add Attachment" button in a post for photos. The photo is then stored locally on the forum, and that storage is limited, as we have learned. This is why I have BEGGED everyone since day 1 to use a photo hosting service, and not attach images via the "attachment" button in posts. I have three options at this point.
- I can reach out to our hosting provider about paying for more storage. To be honest, this is the least likely to happen. The costs of this forum have risen exponentially as we have grown, and I prefer not to pay for storage space when there are other viable options.
- I can start to delete old images. I'm not really a fan of doing this, as posts would start to have blank spaces where images once existed. Sort of defeats the purpose of having an archive of old posts for people to browse through, especially when a reference such as a picture is missing.
- People can start using a hosting service, such as Imgur, which is free. You create an account, upload your photos there, and you can then embed them into your post. Best of all, it's easy to do, and it doesn't use any local storage. This is about the only option moving forward if people still want to post pictures. I believe we even have a step by step tutorial somewhere about it.

You want us to use the insert image button and post a URL, correct?

Sign up for a free imgur account. Log in and drag photo(s) from your pc onto the open imgur window (or cut and paste).
Click on an image to open it.
Click the SECOND Copy button on your imgur image, the one that says Direct Link.
Use that to paste in the Insert Image window here. You can drag the corners to resize the image before you hit Create Post.

Imgur has an app that makes uploading photos and getting links, super easy.
They also allow you to do it right from their site, on a phone or a tablet.

Imgur has an app that makes uploading photos and getting links, super easy. They also allow you to do it right from their site, on a phone or a tablet. However, from the mobile view of TBP, you only see the Quick Reply editor which does not have the Insert Image, etc. buttons. You have to select "Desktop" in the lower right to go to the desktop view of TBP. Although, you also have to do the same thing if you were going to attach an image to a post. How I post pictures is either from my laptop or my iPad. On my iPad, I use the desktop view of TBP. On my iPad, I use the Imgur app. In the app, you select a particular picture, click the "share" icon (the only icon shown), and then select "copy link". In my TBP, then "Insert Image", erase out the "http://" that gets pre-populated there, and paste in the link. On my laptop, after I copy the link from Imgur in my browser, after pasting it into the "Insert Image" dialogue box, I then have to type ".jpg" at the end of the link since Imgur doesn't include that in their "copy" function for some unknown, ungood reason. While on the topic of the mobile view, there is also lacking the "Actions" selection to be able to mark a board as read. -John

FYI, if you're inserting an image from a link on your mobile device (cell phone etc.) you DON'T need to go to desktop view. Just copy the link and when you're typing your post, put an I in square brackets, paste the link and put a /I in square brackets after. I'll explain with round brackets...
blah blah blah (i) link of photo.jpg (/i)
and that will work without having to navigate the desktop version.
Don't forget...use SQUARE BRACKETS, not the round ones in my example.

I believe the tags in square brackets should be [ img]link.jpg[ /img] not just i. Leave out the extra space i put in the tags - had to do that or this post would try to use my fake link. And, with your Imgur pic selected, tap and hold on the photo select "share direct link" and then "copy to clipboard". This will get you the entire direct link, including the .jpg (full file name) which is needed. If you simply choose "share" you don't get the full link and have to manually add the .jpg extension.

That was an important part of the equation! Also, to get the jpg, you must click on the photo to open it separately first and then copy the link. Thanks!!
