Hi all, New to pipes, but not to smoking. Trying to learn a bit about the process. I enjoy the the fiddling part of using a pipe almost as much as the smoking. Loading the bowl, tamping, lighting and cleaning. I've only tried a few tobaccos and find that some are not as enjoyable as others. My favorite taste so far has been maple leaf from Boswell but I haven't tried cherry yet. The off the shelf brands from local stores do not seem as good .

Good luck with your new hobby. I found the patch to exceed all my expectations. Welcome and read everything. I didn't at first but eventually you will want to. I feel like I am at a B&M smoking lounge listening and sometimes participating in random conversations.

Welcome to the patch! If you're trying to build a cellar and have a little dough to spare, I'd like to recommend you check out the Blend of the Month thread. This month we've got a blend called Amphora original blend. I've never tried it myself and I'm looking forward to it. I'd also suggest subscribing to emails from Pipes & Cigars and Smokingpipes if you haven't done so. Bulk sales can be a great way to try new blends.

I think you'll find the breadth and depth of knowledge and assistance here second to none. Not claiming to be an expert by any means, but I'd encourage you to try a sampling of the spectrum pipe tobacco genre's, i.e. Aromatic Blends, English Blends, Balkan Blends, Virginia Perique (VaPer's), etc... The surprise revelation for me, in my admitted short tenure here, was how pleasant some of the "Codger" OTC (over the counter) blends are. Blends such as Carter Hall (one of my favorites), Prince Albert and others. Also surprising to me was how many of the Aromatics, such as different "Cherry" blends, Fruit blends, Whisky or Bourbon blends (ones that sound pleasant and benign), all seemed to "Bite" me. Meaning that I experienced chemical burns on my tongue or the roof of my mouth. Again, welcome aboard and enjoy the journey. Dino

Welcome to the forum, where at in California do you live? I live in the salad bowl, near central coast in a town called Prunedale. Myself and many of the locals humorously refer to it as Prunetuckey.

I moved here from Hollister, and drove through Prunedale all the time working in Salinas, and trucking back and forth to Fremont.

Yep I'm familiar with Hollister but usually only go for the bike rally. I've been in the area since 87 and plan to push through a few more years to retirement and though I love here I'm going to move on to greener pastures when I retire. California is a long ways from what it was in the late 80's. It's getting too expensive to stay....

So true.... And this freight crossed my dock here the other day, and sadly it isn't uncommon.
