After reading about various pipe tobaccos,I decided to get some 1792. One of the reasons was because everyone said it was strong. I like the stronger ones because of nicotine content. I don't find it particularly strong. I have tried packing and loading with it straight out of the tin, slightly rubbed. That's the way I like it best. When I took out a flake and let it dry it smoked very hot and tasted completely different. This is one I'll buy again, but how do the experts smoke this one? Do you let it air dry a bit or straight out of the tin. This requires many relights but I usually light up and set my pipe down, come back to it later, this is the first tobacco where I enjoyed that last 3rd of the bowl more than the first. I think because at that point it is the correct dryness. I'm looking for others similar ....any recommendations? Looking for full bodied with higher vitamin N,that won't make my lungs explode because it is so harsh. I tried some night train as well but the smoothness of the 1792 was superior in my opinion.

I've never tried 1972, but I have had similar issues with most of my other flakes. I haven't found the best drying technique yet.
Edit: I'm assuming you're referring to SG 1972 flake.

I love the stuff and smoked it exclusively for a few years. I usually just load a pipe from the tin and deal with the relights. Once it gets going properly it's a delight for me. I use Cob Plug (1792 in plug form) similarly with the difference being I can cut slices much thinner that the flake form so it's easier to light for me.

… like John, I smoke it right from the tin or in my case, 250 gm. box...I prefer the Cob Plug but its too hard to find...sometimes I'll even knife cut the flakes a bit or shred it a bit instead of the fold and stuff...

I pay almost no attention to packing methods etc. I do let flakes dry a little - not crispy, still pliable - then basically just jam it into the bowl, not too tight, not too loose, making sure there's a good draw. If you dry too much it loses some of the flavor, but if you smoke too wet it can bite and be hard to keep lit.
