Holy crap. I got this, because of the polarized reviews on multiple sites. Mostly bad reviews. I had to try it. The tobacco comes in a dark colored turd form. The aroma, unsmoked, is rubber, asphalt, a little sour, and a little fired. I cut it into slices, and rubbed them into coarse ribbons. I packed it in my large Nording freehand. It took quite a few lights to get it going. Once going, the taste was reminiscent of burnt rubber, dirt, and cinder. I could not smoke the whole bowl. The off-putting, deeply sinister, cooked tar flavor was just too much. 1/10, will try again when I'm feeling masochistic.
Edit: nic hit is as intense as the burnt tar.

Yeah, but now you have more hair on your chest!
Waiting for Jiminks to revise his review.... “Easily an all day smoke”

Kinda get the impression you didn't find it to your liking I dunno. Maybe I should've let it dry out a bit more. I will definitely revisit it, but it sure did give me the feeling I was smoking the Grim Reaper's tobacco. Maybe it's better in cob... ;-)

Sometimes, a tobacco just tastes like sawdust and napalm.

For some smokers, a pipe is just a nicotine delivery device.

I'm grateful for reviews like this to warn me off certain tobaccos that I KNOW I won't like.
However, when a road is being tarred I just love that smell. i could smell tar all day. Dammit - maybe I'd like this blend.

I have a couple of tins I have been sitting on for a few years. 💩Perhaps that is appropriate. I will really have to be in an adventurous mood when I crack the seal on one. Hah! I said crack.🤡

While I love the brown twists, the black versions are a good thing taken too far, IMHO ... sort of like an overdone steak with not much left except the charcoal flavors.

Dammit - maybe I'd like this blend. Maybe tar isn't the best descriptor. Think of tar and ground meat heated to carbon form, bubbles and hard crack surface. It's almost indescribable. I like the smell of a tarred road too, so I'll retract my former statement.

I also tried sg xx black rope yesterday and it does have a different smell to it,I then tried the sg brown rope #4 and its much better than the black. My understanding is that the black xx starts out as brown #4 but then has a few additional processes that remove some nic and tar,so actually the brown is stronger and tastes better too.
Anyway that's this newby's 2 cents.

I stand by this review. I smoked more of this recently, wondering if 6+ months would make any difference. The only thing that changed is more dirt flavor.
-20 stars

My experience with Irish X Twist, which I happen to like alot, is to let it dry dry dry, give a good grind and rub, then gravity-feed load and pack not-too-tight... it'll burn nice and reveal a Daniel Boone smoke from yesteryear. Not harsh or tarry...

The funny thing is, I have the SG Black XX Twist, and I like that one. I mean, it's really strong, but it doesn't compare to the GH. It has a good mature, well processed, well aged flavor, where the GH is, well...

I like it as a change of pace, but Brown Bogie really trips my trigger.

Just finished my ounce of GH Sweet Rum Twist, I love it. I have Black XX but haven't tried it yet. I also have Brown Bogie and that pretty strong.

I love it as well as the coconut and black cherry. That and I never get the luck of draw trying to get the Brown. The ropes all go well with dark strong coffee or a wee bit of malt or bourbon.

I have yet to find a rope I didn't like. On the same note though, I've never gotten a nic hit from smoking a pipe.

I'm not sure what went wrong over at GH if the black is really this bad.
The Brown Irish Twist is one of the best tobaccos I've ever had. Pure and simple Virginia. SERVED STRONG.

I am in the same boat, the GH Black Ropes never agreed with my taste buds. And I enjoy strong tobacco and a strong cigar! I cant figure out why they are so popular other than perceived scarcity. That said, I suppose my taste buds may change someday.

You know, some of the GH twists were more frequently chewed than smoked, is what I've heard. Try dipping it?

I've chewed on brown bogie and liked it. I love a good pipe full. Stout tobaccos are wonderful. I dont like the Irish at all. I packed 1 bowl and couldnt even hit the halfway mark. BUT I will try it again this afternoon to see if that cat turd makes the waste basket.

I know a few pipers who use this and similar tobaccos as a condiment with some success.
