Later this summer, I'll take my annual vacation to the mountains. At night, there's almost always a campfire, and a load people packed around it. This is the first year I intend to smoke my pipes while there, so I'll be needing some crowd pleasing blends, or at least inoffensive. I'd rather something crowd pleasing, though. I have, on hand, Autumn Evening, 1Q, LL7, Sutliff Mark Twain, Gentleman Caller, and Sutliff Black Cordial - which all smell pretty good, and are fairly heavy aromatics. I also have some Molto Dulce coming in, but I haven't tried it yet. What blend, would you say, epitomizes the wonderful fragrance of old school grandpa pipe smell? That's what I really want to bring. I'll buy whatever the consensus is, if I don't already have it. Thanks for your advice!

I think if you ask 3 people you'll get 8 answers. I enjoy the room note of a few blends, but love arrowhead pipe club mixtures room note more than any other. My wife loves ps ltf and revelation match's room note the latter because it reminds her of burning leaves.

I hate to sound like a smartass, but if you are outside at a campfire, smoke whatever you like the most.
If in that environment with the smoke of the campfire and outdoor air anyone is offended with your choice of pipe tobacco, it is time to find new folks to hang with.
Dine on chili dogs, egg salad and my favorite, 5 star pickled eggs with jalapeno's...after you gas them with that, black irish twist will be like a fresh oxyegen mask to them.

I would suggest picking a blend that you think has a nice roomnote. If someone complains reevaluate your friendship to that person. If you want to know me personally though, I have found that Mac Baren Vanilla Flake has a very pleasing note to non pipe smokers.

There's always one to make a stink... "Eeew, it's TOBACCO! YOU'RE GIVING US THE CANCER!", all while inhaling burnt wood smoke. I get the irony. More than that, I kinda wanted some, "ooooo. That smells good! I love the smell of a pipe." I might try the gas-out trick. Full head of cabbage, broccoli, and beef jerky style. Then go in for the kill with the X Twist.

Cramptholomew with all the blends out there you should be able to find something. I would suggest a Burley forward VaBurPur. Simple but yet complex. The note will standout and yet mix in with the campfire.

Trailboss has a point, likely someone is going to complain about the smell before you even light up.
I have had good success pleasing non pipe smokers with the smell of Cult Blood Red Moon. Its a dessert smoke for sure, but that said its pretty good. The smell though can turn heads, in a good way. "Who's baking a cherry pie?"
What I do is ask if anyone minds if I smoke, as I take out my pipe. Now that can be dangerous, because occasionally every now and then someone does mind and I have to put my pipe away. But most of the time even the potential objectors don't have the courage to mind in public and will let it go.

Luxury Twist Flake is as inoffensive as it comes and is what I've used successfully at family gatherings.

I'd say you'd be safe with a vanilla tobacco. 1Q should keep you right I think.
But I also agree with the above. Ask if they mind. If they do, point out the irony.

I say smoke what you like and enjoy. I have never been able to satisfy everybody, nor have I tried.

I haven't liked cherry before, but the way it's been described sounds fantastic.

I have never had anyone complain about my pipe smoke, but when outdoors I don't feel the need to ask whether or not anyone minds my smoke. I am not criticizing anyone that does, mind you...I am sure that in some cirumstances there are familial relationships that guide the need to do so, fortunately for me that isn't a concern.
If I am out circulating in the public domain, I do smoke Stokkebye nougat, Queen Anne's revenge, trout stream, etc....that offers me a change of pace and allows me to possibly change the perceptions of pipe smoke...It certainly smells a lot better than a Yankee candle!

Are you wanting something discreet or something that people will pick up but likely enjoy the smell?

I haven't gone on a vacation in years but you'd have to pay me to go anywhere with other people. Back in the day when I did family vacations I'd do the attractions one day and then it was up to Mrslax to entertain the kids while I hung out at the local cigar lounges until we'd all meet up for a soak in the pool.

Are you wanting something discreet or something that people will pick up but likely enjoy the smell? Something that smells like the lovely aroma of old time pipe smoke - the kind EVERYBODY loves. When I smoke, it doesn't smell like "pipe smoke", so I can't tell. When you're smoking, you don't get the "passer-by" smell.

Sutliffe J4 Mild Burley is one that I just tried yesterday ... still an aromatic but light and mild enough to smoke all night long. The smell is that quintessential, old school bulk blend with a vanilla / chocolate scent. That being said ... I'll be using mine as a base to add some DFK and a little Perique to.

If you are looking for old school grandpa pipe smell I would take Carter Hall or Sir Walter Raleigh Aro.

If you are looking for old school grandpa pipe smell I would take Carter Hall or Sir Walter Raleigh Aro. I have both, but thinking they're not Aromatic enough. Maybe the new tub of Molto Dulce will fit the bill, along with some Blood Red Moon, and 1Q. I have an ounce of C&D Green River Vanilla that would work - IF IT WOULD EVER DRY OUT! I've had it for a few months, and it's still as sticky as day one. Maybe I'll just order some more Lane BCA and be done with it - unless there's better BCAs out there...

If it's an old-time grandpa smell, for me it would be Condor! Brings me back in time.

Carter Hall:
Ah well. I haven't noticed that particular effect, but it does seem to be more pleasing to civilians.

Troutstream fills that bill, the blue hair ladies crowd around me when I accompany my wife at bingo and smoke that blend.

This is actually pretty amazing. I've been listening to a band called Guided by Voices for over 20 years, and "pass the word the chicks are back" happens to be the chorus to one of my favorite songs by them. Now I know where it came from!

Sure to be a crowd pleaser......SPC Special Reserve Plum Pudding. Besides it’s a great blend to treat yourself while on vacation. Have a safe trip.

Carter Hall, taken for what it is, is ok. It's not a profound smoke, but it is a good smoke. Very workman like, if you know what I mean. Not fussy, gets the job done, on time, within budget, and then goes home.
If I had to pick an over the counter tobacco, I could do a whole lot worse than Carter Hall.
Sometimes you want Vivaldi, and sometimes you want Abba. Sometimes you want pate, sometimes you want burger. Life is good.
