Last night I cleaned and organized all of my pipes. And it is embarrassing the number and diversity. 51 pipes. I have the 13 I love and always love me back. Many of the exact same type so as to be able to enjoy multiple pipefulls without wearing out a pipe. These are the pipes for which I would gladly abandon all the others, should it come to that. The 13 for which i would forsake all others. I have 7 that are diversions, quite good, but reminders why I love the 13. 12 churchwardens, because they are sooo cool and when I smoke them I take on a persona that is quite effective in the right circles. 15 cobs, because i can keep them in the tackle box, the glove compartment, the day bag. 4 clays because, well, they are clays. So that is enough already. I don't want to collect, I want to smoke. So how many you got? How many you want? What is the strategy going forward? Any for which you would forsake all others?

Over these many years I've at one time or another owned about 200 pipes not at the same time.I'm down to about 30 really good smokers now. That's really more than I need.I just don't want to give any of them up.There's 2 more that I've been thinking about.A full bent billiard and a cherry wood style. My absolute favorite is a Dunhill straight billiard that's over 25 years old..It smokes really great.

Only 51?? You must be a Rookie! No doubt. I went for many (many) years with the same 12 pipes, during my "first wave". Here in my second wave I have gone a little nuts, but nuts is all relative I guess. I have seen some amazing pipe collections, er... ummm.. accumulations. So how many you got?

well Jeff...looks like brilliant(?) minds think alike! Last purchase (gifted from late MIL) in '12. At my age of 77.5...good # to stop at. 3 junkers for outside work, if not a cigar, 3 small bowl meer, the rest briars ranging from a few Grp 4 all the way to 3 ridiculous, all 1.00" bowl inside diameter & near 3" deep. Those not in regular rotation. I for a long time have rotated 10-11 briars, various bowl sizes xcept the afore-mentioned, when they holla "time to clean us", do so, bring out another 10-11 or so. Has worked for yrs...I won't change. Nice thread & thanx for starting it.

I have about 15 and I don't think I'll get many more. Maybe a Charlestown Cobbler if it comes to the UK.

So how many you got? How many you want? What is the strategy going forward? Any for which you would forsake all others? This is scary..! The bowl count just now = 264. Stanwell 88 Danish pipemakers 35 Danish pipe 44 Foreign pipes 97 It must be said that they all get smoked in turn; the Stanwells,
the BBBs and the Petersons are my favourites, but I won't forsake any for others. No way. I don't know how many I want. I want the ones,
I like the shape and finish of.

I've got a little over 100, not counting cobs, clays and meerschaums. My PAD got kind of out of hand; don't understand it. I'd like to get my collection down to 60 or less.

Less than 2 years ago I had 1 pipe. A little embarrassed to admit that I have over 90 or so now. :-)
Admittedly the majority are estates that I've refurbed, but that makes em all the more special, to me anyway.

I don’t know how many I have since I refuse to count them, I can state I don’t have as many as herbinedave though, not that there’s anything wrong with that! banjo

A smoker that knows exactly how many pipes he has, likely doesn't have that many.

Ummm......well it’s almost 50 years of me enjoying a pipe. So, I lost count, well I basically don’t want to count I guess. In all honesty if I find a bargain, and yes it must be a bargain “ I might “ buy another. Especially if it’s an Estate chubby pot that’s restorable. Oh, in my mind Cobs don’t count.....the MM are inexpensive. How I enjoy that Country Gentleman bowl. Ive made myself a number of Cobs using that bowl. The method that MM uses to cure/harden the bowls of the Country Gentleman and the Diplomat make them last almost a lifetime.
Well done Missouri Meerschaum, great quality and craftsmanship for the price👍👍👍👍👍👍

I'm a smoker, a collector, and have also been repairing, refurbishing and selling pipes since 2011. So, I'm regularly adding to the "inventory" to keep up the offerings, and really crank it up when I'm gearing up to serve as a vendor for a pipe show (Raleigh, NC is my current jam). That said...I 'think' I've got about 250 in the personal collection (most of which get smoked...some are indeed 'dust collectors')...but I'll bet I have another 400 in the work bins, the vast majority of which will gradually be refurbed / repaired and sold.

Wow! Do you adopt a yearly rotation of your pipe then?

A smoker that knows exactly how many pipes he has, likely doesn't have that many. A person who is both a smoker and collector does! Exactly and I've registered my collection in a spreadsheet and stashed copies on USB-sticks in various (I hope) safe places. Should something happen to said collection, a house fire for instance, there will be an insurance claim to be made and I now have the documentation.

I never thought of having an inventory for insurance purposes. That's a good call, Stanhill.

I never thought of having an inventory for insurance purposes. That's a good call, Stanhill . Thanks, Legend. In our old flat, I had about 400 books stashed away in a box in our basement room; the room was flooded because of a thunderstorm and all the books were destroyed. Luckily, I had my book collection inventoried and the insurance company paid up without any haggling. So I think that it's a good idea to have lists.
