So this might be a bit gross and personal... Apologies in advance. I read online that heavy tobacco use can cause oral thrush. Has anyone experienced this? Reason I say is cos I've had a sore throat for about 2 weeks. I'm going to see the doctor tomorrow, but I've self diagnosed (based on pictures) that I may have oral thrush. And since heavy tobacco use can cause it and we've had a burst of sunshine forcing me to smoke more often, it makes sense. Only thing that doesn't make sense is that while it was heavy tobacco use for me (about 8 bowls over the space of 14 days never more than once a day), this is nothing for most other pipe smokers. Maybe my body wasn't used to it. Does anyone suffer from anything like this after a lot of bowls? Like I said, it's gross and personal so no need to reply.... It's just this place is the only place I can ask this.

Nope, I never suffered from thrush and I’m smoking a pipe a long time. Wonder if your sore throat is from a nasal drip caused by pollen??? Gargle with warm salt water and in 2 days you’ll be back to your old self. Good luck at the doctors, I’m sure he/she will do a painless throat culture to rule out streptococcus. Most likely if you had thrush, your tongue would also be sore and you’d see white areas on your tongue....that’s thrush.
PS I smoke 9 to 15 bowls a day. Only thing that’s happened to me like most other pipe smokers.....tongue bite from overly moist blends.

Actually upon reflection, after every smoke I brush my teeth, scrape my tongue, brush my tongue and cheeks and rinse well with mouth wash. Perhaps I'm removing all the good bacteria by doing all that.

why do you think so many pipe smokers drink alcohol while they are smoking? kills thrush germs! (just kidding, i have no idea.) But like lonecoyote said, it may just be sinus issues. warm weather also equals pollen.

...I'm reasonably certain it has nothing to do with pipe smoking, LL...

I agree too that it is a separate issue. I would also not volunteer the fact that you smoke a pipe, as the mention will probably elicit an automatic bias to stop.

Interesting... Maybe it's a combo, or maybe I'm just susceptible.
Only reason I mentioned it here is cos of this sentence...

Come to think of it, this all happened after I opened a packet of blue green algae that our dog food supplier advised we get for our dog.
It's a very fine powder, finer than flour. I got a plume of it in my face and got quite a lung-full.
I got a bit paranoid for a sec.

Yes, it has happened to me on two occasions in the last few years. The last time being fairly recently (a couple of months ago). At first I thought that I had just burned my mouth after smoking too many bowls in one night. I quit smoking for a couple of days to let it heal, but it didn't get any better. The nurse practitioner prescribed "Magic Mouthwash" (that's actually what they call it). After 3 days of using it as prescribed, my mouth got better. Diabetics are more prone to get thrush too.

I read that too. As far as I know I'm not diabetic, but what happened to me is as you described. I bought magic mouthwash last night, used it before bed and felt much better this morning. Will keep at it for a few more days and see if the nurse practitioner prescribes anything else.

I got a mental image of a bird taking up residence in your oral cavity, so I had to google the name. The articles I read, didn't mention tobacco among the causes or risk factors.

maybe that one I read was a one off. Regardless, it's good to know I've not got throat cancer...yet.

So it wasn't thrush at all. Mouth and throat are clear.
Nurse practitioner did look up the blue green algae and it said that inhalation on that causes throat irritation...so there's my answer...for now.
