I'm on the island of Crete in the Med. Famous for its olive oil of course but I am finding smoking pipes made of Olive wood. Just a gimmick or could they be ok?

They smoke just fine once you break them in....slowly. Then once a thin layer of cake is formed in the chamber you can increase your cadence. Many pipe makers use Olive wood to create some stunning pipes.

I have one olive wood pipe in my collection and it is a wonderful smoker. Follow Lonecoyote's advice re slowly breaking it in.

Yo lent
Olivewood has some gorgeous grain, and I love the way the contrast increases as I smoke it. I enjoy puffing Latakias in the first few bowls as I am breaking in the pipe and before the cake has had a chance to build. Olivewood is not a gimmick at all.

Thanks for all your helpful replies. Only trouble is finding tobacco to put in it! Can't find a proper tobacconist anywhere up 'til yet. Thought I had got some in a supermarket and got back to my hotel to find it was rolling tobacco. The packaging is all Greek to me ! Well it would be wouldn't it. Will have to eke out what I brought with me. Haven't yet seen one other pipe smoker which doesn't bode well.

Is there no tobacco in these places you're finding olive wood pipes? If they are in gift shops then is there a chance these MIGHT be a bit gimmicky?

Some of you are familiar with Ed James (formerly known as 'Ozark Southpaw' on a few other forums). Ed worked in briar and several other woods for pipe making. He made this olive and stand from the same piece; the olive broke in for me just as a new briar...and it's a great smoker. I am privileged to have this Ed James pipe, purchased not long before his unfortunate death last year. Olive makes a beautiful pipe!

You can always identify an Olive Wood pipe by that ink floating on water look. I quite like it.

Start out with an inexpensive Mr. Brog, look on eBay you’ll find one that catches your 👀 eyes 👀.

The great Danish Pipe maker Børge Blume-Jensen makes some olive pipes; he 's very, very good, his prices are nice and he's a very kind person. I have 7 of his pipes and I can't recommend him enough.
This way for the pipes, ladies and gentlemen:

Thanks for the link. His prices are very fair and the pipes he creates are outrageous. I like you get to pick from different grades 👍

Those pipes are fantastic. Still way above my price range, but lovely to look at.

Olive wood is a beautiful pipers choice. Must be either professionally kiln-dried to a 8-10% moisture content, or dry seasoned for years prior to forming into a pipe.

Well I'm back home from Crete and I couldn't find a decent tobacconist anywhere to buy tobacco let alone an olive wood pipe. There were some in gift shops but as someone previously mentioned I think they were gimmicky ! Anyway back in a very hot Wales (for once!), I have now ordered one from Mr Brog so looking forward to receiving that and seeing how it performs ! Thanks for all previous comments. Very helpful !

Well, my Mr Brog has now arrived, so busy breaking it in. I can't fault the service and communications from the seller. He also included not one, but 2 tampers. Very pleased up to now !

Here's a real nice one.
I've even been toying with the idea of buying it for myself. I mean, one can never have enough pipes.

Well I am in the process of breaking in my Mr Brog olive wood pipe. It smokes very well though I must admit I am cautious about Bent pipes as I have had a couple where draw holes clogged up and one in fact proved impossible to clear. However with this one I am making sure a thicker pipe cleaner passes through without problems. However the bowl seems to get very hot quite quickly but hopefully as a deposit builds up that may get better. And before anyone comes back telling me to draw more slowly and not fill the bowl up, I do know how to break in a pipe! What is concerning though Is the filter. I always use a 9mm filter on all my pipes, which are mainly Peterson and Savinellis. The filter always looks good for 2 or3 smokes, though I do replace every smoke. However with this new Olive wood, even using my regular tobacco (Thomas Radford Sundays Fantasy), and only filling bowl a quarter full, the filter is absolutely filthy and no way could it be used more than once. The stem seems to remain quite clean so the filter is doing its job, but even so I am surprised it does get really stained so any comments ?

I was fortunate to meet Ed James in person at the Dr. Grabow factory tours a couple of times...but also visited him at his home in Poplar Bluff, MO several years ago when I was on the road. He was quite instrumental for me in my early days of pipe repair / refurbishment...a mentor if you will. I miss that guy.
