Protect your router from VPNFilter malware

Over half a million home and office internet routers around the globe have been infected by a strain of malware known as VPNFilter. And yes, you may be at risk.

VPNFilter contains spyware that can collect your private information—like usernames and passwords—and control what sites you see. It can also use your internet connection to spread to other people. Some routers even stop working after infection.


The FBI highly suggests taking immediate action.
What to do
There are three simple steps you can take to make sure your router is free and clear.

Reboot your router: this will stop VPNFilter in its tracks and help the FBI trace it, but a latent version of the malware may still be on your router.
To reboot the router, unplug it and wait 30 seconds before plugging it back in.

Update to the latest firmware: your router’s manufacturer may have already rolled out an update to block VPNFilter.
Reset the router: a factory data reset will delete all of your network settings, removing any traces of malware in the process. Most routers have a Reset switch somewhere on the back or underside.
For specific instructions on updating firmware and performing a reset, check your router’s manual (you can find most online).
A few safety tips…
Change your router password regularly and keep the firmware up to date. If you’re still using the default password written on the bottom of your router, change it right away. Default passwords are the easiest to crack, and most are publicly available online.

Keep in mind, older routers can put you at higher risk for malware. If your router is aging and doesn’t have new firmware available, maybe consider an upgrade.
