The Frankenblend topic caused me to dig out an old notebook and peruse the contents from years ago. I can honestly say "what was I thinking?" My tastes changed dramatically while traveling the blend highway but I guess that journey is taken by us all.
My scribblings were an eye opener and among the notes were a few comments on loading a pipe "Parfait" style. I have to laugh at myself for some of the off-the-wall combinations I tried like cherry aromatic over Lat. forward blend.
I haven't played that game in many moon, but I'd like to hear from those that have, both your successes and dismal failures.

I haven't played that game in many moon, but I'd like to hear from those that have, both your successes and dismal failures. This is always a topic of high interest for me, not only because i have found great pleasures in mixing the most likely & unlikely tobaccos into my pipe, but also because so many have expressed utter disdain over the concept entirely. A common refrain is that if the company blender wanted it so, they would have blended it so. Hence, no need we look further. Nothing so limited as a closed mind I say. FrankenBlends provide one with an endless Kaleidoscope of flavor profile possibilities, and in-so-doing extend one's cellar infinitely in breadth and depth. I personally will try mixing anything with just about anything, and often experience something wonderful. Believe it or not, Strang mixed with 4th Generation 1931 Flake enhanced both in myriad ways... Shortcut to Mushrooms with Escudo - fabulous. My mixtures tease me ad-infinitum! I am an adventurer in every way, and my pipe is a vessel that gets me through uncharted waters in wondrous ways! Fear not, go forth!

Yeah this is going to be fun...the lat/cherry blend almost sounds like something worthwhile..like something smoked with a cherrywood .. I cant bring myself to to go whacky yet..I will still try to keep things in the same scope...nutty/van/buttrscotck etc.. and maybe the lats and such mixed with Va/Pers etc

In all, the process will really expand your palette knowledge base. Jump into the deep end and GO FOR IT!!!

Actually no... won't melt your face off. In fact, just may be excellent in the right ratios.

I haven't done anything particularly bizarre. I did make up my own version of ersatz Balkan Sobranie by mixing Yenidje Supreme with Vintage Syrian - about 20% Vintage Syrian. Jarred it and left it for about 6 months. Turned out to be delicious! I like it mucho better than that crap that Germain's is making.

My guess is there's some adventurous souls here. An old old man clued me in on the parfait procedure many years ago. Rather than mix the tobaccos together you load half your bowl with one blend then load the rest of the bowl with an entirely different blend (on top) giving you two layers to smoke through. He was fond of CH over a layer of PS Navy flake and although I found it smokeable it wasn't a hit for me. Butternut Burley topped with a layer of Escudo was about the best I could come up with and I still visit that combination once in a while. I guess the worst was Christmas Cookie topped with Eggnog. Thought it might be festive around the holidays but it got goopy in a hurry and gurgled something fierce.

I have a jar that has 1 pouch each of 5 bros..half and half...palidin black cherry and SWR reg..not bad not goopy and a decent burn..not hot and east to keep lit
I also have my leftovers of nutty hazel..sterling double(golden) eagle and sterling white tail aro mixed in another jar..not a bad smoke there..the cube cut burley is nice cause it keeps me from packing the bowl to firm and it is also just so darn good...nutty hazel it self is nice and when all are mixed it is a mildly sweet and netty smoke..one i may make again just because it is that good

Reminds me of the most vile blend I ever had the honor of smoking. My buddy smoked kreteks and wanted a pipe blend similar to them so mixed cloves with prince albert. No tongue but because your tongue went numb and couldn't taste anything.

I've been throwing scraps in a jar for about 6 years and I think there must be 40 different blends in it. I have not smoked it yet but it smells interesting. I'll have to try it tomorrow.

Luv this thread guys, but I will put a spanner in the works, mixing in various blends of legal herbs with your exotic tobacco mixes . My base is mullein leaf & marshmallow root ( which it is best to grind ) and everything from coltsfoot , skullscap, mugwort , damiana etc. Only a pinch with you various tobacco mixes. Herbalists will say these herbs have healing qualities , and they make nice teas as well. My favourite tobacco mix at the moment is my 11 different American Aromatics mix jar..what shall I call it " Stars & Spangles " perhaps . My 3 jar mixes ( in " My three Jar" thread, ) are my bedrock for my morning , daily & evening smokes. But all things lawful with moderation & gratitude. But I am only a beginner ,yet....

Ok...Some Captian Black Gold and I added about 1/2 and inch of a Drew Estate Java cigar..It was pretty good but I am sure that a better quality aromatic tobacco would make this combo very nice indeed!

Loaded some unmarked Burley based sample(included with an order some time back)and topped it with 1/4 inch of BBF dust. Smoked quite well in my meer Lovat. Earthy thick and rich to the end. Three thumbs up.

If it were me, I'd rehumidify and mix... just be sure your cigars are of high quality with a flavor profile you enjoyed. Try a ratio of 1/3rd cigar leaf with 2/3rds pipe tobacco, no more maybe less.
