And I thought tobacco was native to North America all these years. But it is from the Americas!
"As nicotine is a biomarker for tobacco, this resets the arrival of tobacco in North America by at least a millennium earlier than previous studies would indicate.”

It occurs to me that the use of tobacco in a pipe may precede these findings. We know that maze was growing in the America’s 10,000 years BC and tobacco was growing as far back as 6,000 years BC. It seems likely to me that some resourceful gentlemen, living say 5,000 years BC, could have discovered the value of hollowing out a corncob, used a reed or bored out stick for a stem, loading it with some tobacco, and suddenly realized the pleasure and potential offered by the lowly corncob pipe. Of course this will be very difficult for any to prove as corncob pipes don’t survive very well when buried, fall into some river or stream, or left outside to the elements.
I’m not trying to dispute the article provided by the OP but I enjoy the thought of a man from a much earlier generation resting under a shade tree, next to a river, smoking some air dried tobacco (Burley?) in his corncob pipe. Did this happen? I don’t know. Could it have happened? Maybe...
