I'm pretty surprised it was only a 5-4 decision.

Well that sucks! Hardly a surprise. We’re taxed at every turn anyway. AJ

This is quite multi-faceted but could very possibly have a chilling effect on selling or shipping tobacco across state lines. A buddy of mine who works for USPS informed me it's actually already against the law to ship tobacco across state lines without a permit due to tax implications. Not my field of expertise; however, I could easily see this being the last shoe that drops on sale of tobacco over the Internet.

I couldn’t agree more, it is up to the people that represent the citizen to do their legislative duty on issues like this... and the voter can hold them accountable or support them in the future based on their decisions.

This one's too easy to delve into politics. So all I'm going to say is we're screwed no matter what.

UGh!
While, I agree with the dissent, I wasn't surprised with the decision. This is further justification to stock up now. I don't want to speculate what the next disappointment will be.

Okay, let’s be honest....who didn’t see this coming!!! The State and Feds lose millions, if not a billion or two annually from people shopping online. It was inevitable! My cellar is technically overstocked and the reality is I don’t “ need “ to purchase any more tobacco......but I most likely will until the tax bites!!!
According to what’s listed on my spreadsheets....if I smoke 15 Pipes a day @ age 66, I have enough good blends if I lived to the ripe old age of 114.3 years. That ain’t happening!!!
PS I’m sure Mr. JimInks has most of us beat 👍👍👍. So, if a tobacco apocalypse hits Jim better hide in his secret bunker 😃😂😃😂

This sucks - but even if you have all the tobacco you'll ever need, there's still pipes.... not to mention books, electronics, and whatever else you buy online. It was kind of a loophole in the system, but one that worked for ordinary people for once.

I think a lot of B&M tobacconists will be happy with this ruling.
I'd much rather deal with a local business than an online seller.

Wolfman & Legend lover.....with the nuclear fallout that would occur I would not have the heart to charge either of you rent. But I’d be scared $hit to open the door and let you in......lol. God knows what you two would look like....especially that long trip from Ireland. LMAO!!!

It was inevitable. You younger members will one day tell your grand kids that you remember when the Internet was unregulated. This is the first significant move on the part of Government to gain total control and regulation of the Net.

I can understand how some would view it in this manner but it appears to be more about commerce in this particular instance.

I think a lot of B&M tobacconists will be happy with this ruling. I'd much rather deal with a local business than an online seller. I would rather the government give relief to the B&M’s than to tax online purchasers. The government doesn’t have a funding problem, the government has a spending problem.

I'm surprised that this hasn't happened sooner. Once they get this underway, states will have a significant source of revenue. Glad I've got my cellar full already. Our sales tax here in Tennessee is around 10%, counting state and local. What is yours?

Supposedly, this is all the nonsense is proposed for our own good and concern for our health. Juvenile diabetes is a real problem, and so it is with adults....start regulating sugar products to the degree that tobacco products are. Excessive sodium intake is bad for the heart, maybe a Cheetos tax...$15.00 per ounce of Cheetos or any other salty snack. Alcohol is a big one...broken families, destroyed livers...maybe a $100 tax on a 750 ml bottle of booze. If is is where we want to go, maybe we should just go full bore on prohibition, because it worked out so well last time.

Enforcing the user taxes already on the books was inevitable, which is why I paid mine all along. The question is whether states will move to request purchase information from online sellers in order to attempt to collect on user taxes already owed but unpaid. Personally, this won't affect me one way or the other. B&M's have been screaming bloody murder over online businesses having what they consider an unfair advantage. The monetization of the Net is accelerating.

And, if the movies have told us anything, all these catastrophies only happen in the states. You guys can come to Ireland (just bring your cellars with you).

It's only a matter of time before there's an aspartame tax too.

IRC and I hope someone will correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t you supposed to be paying them already. It went self reported on your tax’ forms. Just most people didn’t do that.

So all this time we're supposed to have been keeping track of all our online purchases, calculating the taxes on them, and paying them with our tax returns? I have never heard of an accountant asking, "any online purchases this year?"

Ok,so here in Oklahoma, businesses that charge a sales tax have to have a "Sales Tax Permit".Are they going to require internet companies that ship here to acquire one or are they going to discontinue the fee charged to get one. Also companies that return $2500 or more in collections have to enroll in a "Data Sharing" software,is amazon, ebay,P&C,etc going to enroll or be exempt.Or will they just stop the internet sales altogether. I don't know about yous guyz, but I'm getting my tin foil hat ready.

It really seems that Congress would need to step up and create a single framework but barring this each state will have the choice to crete their own law. At the moment the only one avaled by the Supreme Court is South Dakota's so I'd expect other states to pass very similar ones.
