Like George Carlin said, "and they always need a little more money"

IRC and I hope someone will correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t you supposed to be paying them already. It went self reported on your tax’ forms. Just most people didn’t do that. So all this time we're supposed to have been keeping track of all our online purchases, calculating the taxes on them, and paying them with our tax returns? I have never heard of an accountant asking, "any online purchases this year?" I think it depends on the state. In my state the "voluntary" reporting of online, non-taxed purchases on state income tax returns has been in force for several years. I suspect most people ignore it. And it only applies to the state tax amount (4% here). Since I tend to support local businesses, my online purchases are minimal. But I always report it. Helps me sleep peacefully at night. Then again, some states (like Florida) do not have state income tax. So using income tax returns to pay sales tax on online purchases would be impossible. At any rate, dealing with the various state laws and charging sales tax at the point of purchase might be a nightmare scenario for small businesses.

This one's too easy to delve into politics. So all I'm going to say is we're screwed no matter what. I'm gonna leave it right there, too.

Good read and thanks. All I can say without violating forum rules except this is a multi-faceted issue which will cut across a lot of lines.

For what it's worth, Smokingpipes had already started collecting taxes on purchases from Arizona some months back, not sure if that was across all states or not.
If they leave it as just the sales tax alone, in some states it should still be a bargain to shop online if they can avoid the additional taxes implemented by cities and such.

SP doesn't collect the PA Sales Tax, but they report your purchase to the State, and you are liable to pay the tax at the end of the year. I never smoked cigarettes, but I can remember when all of those who bought from the Indian Reservations were tracked down and made to pay the taxes.

Arizona definitely goes after residents buying cigarettes online, one guy in North Phoenix was hit ith a bill for 5K, I think that he as reselling or doing group buys....Cigarette taxes here are a lot higher than just the sales tax.

Can't help but wonder how Justice Scalia would have voted on this one!

I'm surprised that this hasn't happened sooner. Once they get this underway, states will have a significant source of revenue. Glad I've got my cellar full already. Our sales tax here in Tennessee is around 10%, counting state and local. What is yours? Just over 200%. Not twenty, but over two hundred percent tax on tobacco. And some want it to be four hundred percent, to reduce the smoking rate below 5% smokers by the year 2035. . link

Can't help but wonder how Justice Scalia would have voted on this one! I'm going to conjecture but I'd guess he'd have voted against South Dakota and in favor of established precedent. Many people seem to equate Gorsuch's vote with Scalia but their differing opinions make me think that at least in this case, they'd have been on different sides. What do you think?

SP doesn't collect the PA Sales Tax, but they report your purchase to the State, and you are liable to pay the tax at the end of the year. That's true for Colorado as well.
