Sugar Barrel Match is a great burley-forward codger style blend. In my opinion, the large cut pieces should be rubbed before packing. The brown sugar topping is noticeable, but not wholly overpowering. It's a great diversion from the traditionally cased codger blends. This is not a complex, meditative blend. It's flavor doesn't change much throughout the smoke. You get brown sugar, some bread, some nuts, and the expected consistency of this type of blend. It's a work horse. A blend to smoke while in the shop, mowing the lawn, and going about your business - something that requires no over thought. Great all day smoke, and different enough from the other codger style blends to make it interesting. Burns clean, without bite, and hardly any moisture. 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

Great review. Sounds like the flavours complement each other.

Never had the pleasure as of yet to smoke this blend, I should for I lean towards Burley blends.. How would you compare this to the old codger Carter Hall. Yup, I still enjoy this long time OTC blend, takes me back too β yesteryear β. πππ My 3 favorite old codgers are Amphora Original, Carter Hall and the Original Captain Black.

How could anyone not? I don't judge that stuff, other than to say it's been around so long for some very good reasons - consistency, mildness, and comfort. Sugar Barrel is a little bit of a step up, in terms of quality, but it has that nostalgic, true to itself simplicity that you get with the old OTC blends. You definitely get the brown sugar casing with it, which sets it apart as it's own thing. I like it, and will keep it in my codger rotation.

I only realised the other day that amphora was an otc. It's not an otc over here anyway.

I smoked SB in the early 1970's. Your review sounds like what the old stuff was. A pleasant smoke that didn't require a lot of work. Nice review that, hopefully, will bring more people to try the old OTC's from bygone days.

Have you tried the H&H Sweet Cask? It is a match from Pipes and Cigars. It needs a dry time and to be broken down a bit. I enjoy it.
As for Carter Hall I am not able to compare it with another.
