I’m new to this forum, but a few may already know L&H Stern is one of the big 3 in my collection. BBB and GBD are the others. I currently have over 60 LHS pipes. This Firethorn checked all the boxes for me. Squat bulldog, sterling silver band, and tapered stem. I’ve only seen 5 Firethorn models in the past few years, and I’ve managed to bring 3 of them home. This is a welcomed addition to the collection. LHS Sterncrest Firethorn shape number 88. .

Superb restoration, especially around the rim!!! The pipe actually looks as if it’s never been smoked 👌👌👌 That’s an LHS shape/model you rarely find. Any LHS pipe you come across that has the full Sterncrest stamp try and grab for your collection. I too have many LHS pipes in my collection, some I have posted pictures prior. The squat bulldog for me has the perfect chamber diameter/depth for flake blends. Happy smoking 👍👍👍

Here is an original ad that was my grandfathers for LHS Sterncrest Pipes. The price range started from $1.00 all the way up to $25.00. Back in the 30’s & 40’s, $25.00 was quite a lot of money to spend on a pipe. The $25.00 pipes were limited editions with gold bands. Some of the LHS Purex pipes sold for $5.95 with a pouch of tobacco. Many popular shapes to choose from as well.

Thank you everyone. Thanks Coyote. I got my first Sterncrest in a wholesale lot with many other pipes. Even though it was used and abused, I could tell it was quality made. It cleaned up very nice and after I smoked it, I was hooked. They’re fantastic old smokers. Here’s my very first LHS. I have 2 Special Make’s. I’m working on getting the 6 different shapes from the 1940’s advertisement. Being that I’ve only seen a handful in years, it’ll be a while before that set is complete.

daveg, I too have the original ad you posted above. The Sterncrest line with the gold band is the most desirable for collectors today. I own all 6 shapes in new unsmoked condition. They are kept in my gun safe and my daughter knows my wishes when my time is up on Earth. Keep your eyes open on eBay and Etsy, they are up for sale/bid from time to time. If I come across any of the 6 you will be sent a PM. Good luck in your search 👍👍👍

Feel free to share how you cleaned that nasty stem. It is immaculate in the "after" pictures.

Gee whiz! How'd you bring that stem back to life? It's perfect! I heated the stem and pushed out the dents from the inside. Then used a needle file and sandpaper. Followed up with compound and wax.

Followed up with compound and wax. well, that's some expertise right there. I tried heating up one of the stems on a $10 eBay estate (my first attempt). Let's just say you have to be EXTREMELY careful... Obviously, you have knack!
