It comes as a very loose flake and breaks apart easily. The flakes are made of light brown and dark brown tobaccos. They smell lightly fermented and sweet. The flakes have very little moisture and are ready to smoke, as is.
Upon lighting, I get a flavour burst of hay, cut grass, and a slight citrus like sweetness. It’s also pleasantly spicy and sweet.
It’s medium in body, and the nicotine level is somewhere between mild and medium. Set aside at least an hour, as it burns at a less than moderate pace. It never gets harsh, but the bowl will heat up if you’re not paying attention. It burns to a dry, white ash.
Opening Night is a very high quality, medium bodied Virginia. I’ve smoked it in various briars and cobs. I smoke it regularly, and it’s never disappointed. In my opinion, this is one of the best pure Virginia tobaccos currently available. It’s relatively inexpensive and readily available.
I suspect it will age very well, and have set aside several tins for further research.

Except for the addition of Perique, which I’ve never detected, it sounds a lot like Orlik Golden Sliced. Do you find it to be similar in taste? AJ

You put a lot of thought into your reviews and the words you use...at least, it appears that way to me.

Sam, you're quite the prolific tobacco reviewer. I enjoy reading your reviews; they make me want to smoke whatever tobacco you are describing.

Legend Lover Thank you. I’m trying. I find I smoke slower and can focus much more when I’m attempting to break it down. It’s a start, but I have a lot to learn. AJ I find Opening Night to be a more full body blend in relation to Orlik Golden Slice. Nonetheless, I’m a fan of both. haebar Thank you.

I just ordered some OGS, but I'm going to add Opening Night to a future order. Sounds like good stuff. Thanks, Sam.

Sam, your review is very well written and precise 👍👍👍. What year was it tinned? In the past 2 years I have only purchased C&D bulk blends due to the fact I’ve had some mold issues with 2 of their tinned tobacco’s. I’ll check and see if it’s available in bulk and order 4 .oz, like I need another blend to smoke!! Your description pushed a button I guess!!!
PS JUST CHECKED, not available in bulk. I will order a tin with my next TAD order.....OUI

I also have several unopened 2 ounce tins from this January and April. I read about your mold issue fairly recently. I haven’t had a mold issue, yet.

Thanks Sam, smooth as always. I have a couple tins in the cellar. If I didn’t already have a closet full of McClelland Va, I’d be buying more of this one. I really dig on this C&D offering more than some of their others. Quiet Nights and this one are my two favorites from C&D.

Wolfman - Your tobacco reviews are always spot-on with the descriptive characteristics that I look for in my smokes. As I am most partial to sweet n spicy smokes, full-flavored or light, your identification of these traits alert me to blends that I might really enjoy. Your pointing the way is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Thanks again, Sam. I have been thinking about ordering some of this since I am a Virginia lover. And when Mark suggested above that this is one of his favorites (along with Quiet Nights), that sort of pushed me over the edge (Quiet Nights is one of my favorites as well). Good review....

I think you will not be disappointed with Opening Night. Quiet Nights is another great blend. I haven’t smoked it in a while. I’ve got a tin from 2013. I’m saving it for late fall/early winter.

Sam, Great, it was only certain blends.....so I was told by a rep. from C&D.....Smokingpipes of course. I will say the situation was handled promptly. If you have any Bijou I would open every tin and if all is well jar the blend. This is the blend I had the most serious issue with, even though with the replacements I opened all 5....4 were perfect yet 1 had mold in the center. Unnoticed until I spread the blend in a large tobacco tray. Also, I was assured that the problem was resolved and they changed back to their old anti fungal agent recipe, obviously NOT. I was soooooo pissed I just threw the bad batch and wrote it off to experience. Since that time I ONLY buy C&D in bulk version with those blends I enjoy. My recent being Billy Budd Blonde....perfect in bulk!!!
